Does that seem too high to anyone else??

Some details:
I weigh 201.
Average heart rate was 185. Maximum 200. Total time 52:51.

When I walked out I was dripping in sweat.

Does 730 sound right or do you think user error? I ask because with this I'm net 52 calories so obviously was not expecting this and I need to eat eat eat. Last thing I want is to starve my body!!

    Sounds about right to me.

But there's no need to stuff yourself tonight. It's best to think of calories as a weekly thing, not as something that gets reset overnight...

Zumba is known to burn a LOT of calories, and 52 minutes is a long time to be doing it for! I can burn almost 600 in a boxercise class :) try googling and seeing what the average is to get an idea?

What kind of HRM is it? And what is your resting HR....on average?

I went to Zumbacalories.com and put in 201 weight, 53 minutes, high intensity and it estimated 719. It did not ask height or age but that's pretty close to what your hrm said so I'd say it's probably a really good estimate. If your HRM has a chest strap and you were able to program in height/weight/age/gender then it's probably about as good an estimate as you're going to get. :-)

Sounds about right. I usually burned around 700+ cals when I did Zumba on the Wii
  • Thanks for the feedback.

The average per zumbacalories.com is 600 if I remember correctly.

It's an FT7. I don't know my resting average. I wore it for the first time today (well besides a 20 min test at home). When I put it on today I was at 96.

    Thanks for looking!

I've been doing the class for 4 months now so I know all the routines and knew I have been working harder than usual. But I didn't expect this much. I was thinking maybe 500.

Your predicted maximum heart rate is around 187-190. If you hit 200 during your class, that suggests that your ACTUAL max HR is a lot higher than 187-190. If the max heart rate on your HRM is set at the predicted number, then it assumes that you were working at 100+% of your maximum for much/most of the workout. In that case, it will overestimate your calories.

The calculated intensity based on your reported calories burned is about 9 METs. That's the equivalent of running continuously at about 5.5 mph or so for the entire 53 minutes. Can you do that? If not, then your actual calorie burn is less. For Zumba, I suspect it is closer to 550-600.

See if you can change the max HR setting on your HRM and try putting it at 210. I think it will make your numbers more realistic.

That's a pretty incredible burn, I generally burn about 375 calories from an hour of zumba!

  • That seems about right

I always burn about 600-780 calories in Zumba, so you are doing good :) I love Zumba
  • that is prob right for you weight and age I usually burn about 500 in an hour of zumba. But I agree with the above no need to force yourself to eat because of it. Just enjoy the fact that you had a killer burn!!

You're spot on! Zumba is an awesome workout. I burn between 450-600 depending on my effort and energy level for the day and I'm 5'8" and 152 lbs. I have the Polar FT7 and it's a great little HRM! Have fun!
  • It's possible! I can burn over 300 in 30 mins playing the Zumba Wii game. On average I think it is 530 calories an hour, but everyone is different, and it depends on your instructor and the dance combinations.
  • Well damn - I did a high intensity Zumba class last night and according to that calculator I burned 636 calories last night lol. I'm not surprised though - I was dripping in sweat (and I don't normally sweat that much) and it's probably why I don't feel so good today!

Can you compare it to another kind of exercise to get a ball park - I estimate that I burn about 5 cals a minute walking and 10 cals/minute running (of course it will vary, but this is the average) so if I'm doing some other kind of exercise I compare it to how hard I work walking/running and use that as a guideline.

The only real answer on this board. Unless your are seriously out of shape, I seriously doubt doing a workout DVD just would cause your heart rate to get above your V02 Max. If you did you would have experienced shortness of breath, dizziness or difficulty breathing.

  • Sounds about right..........I teach Zumba, I weigh around 140 and I burned 520 tonight in an hour. Your calorie burn will differ each class, or at least it does in mine, I change up songs and moves in each class............(not completly new songs, but I change up the playlist) . Way to work it!!!

So do I. I hit 384 or roughly that when I go for an hour class.
  • It was a class, not a workout DVD

Thanks for this. I most definitely cannot run 5.5mph though I was moving and jumpin the entire class and I am very out of shape. I bought the monitor specifically to not have to estimate the calories burned so I'm a little annoyed if it is in fact wrong (or grossly overestimated). I am going to look into changing the max heart rate. Don't know if I can.
  • Ok I figured out how to change the max heart rate and changed it to 210 as suggested. Hopefully this will give me a more accurate reading.
  • @fitnesschicki... i'm instructor as well. Where are you from? OP-sounds slightly high to me but not by much.

Your heart rate being that high seems a bit off to me, but hey I don't know! The calorie burn sounds pretty realistic though. I'm 5'2 110 lbs 27 years old and in an hour of Zumba I burn around 400ish calories.
