CARBS

I am ALWAYS over on my carbs... What should they be set at? I notice peeps on here have a higher carb allowance than me and yet they're still on the same number of calories. My carbs is set at 120 and my calories per day is 1200. Any ideas what the average (healthy) carb intake should be.? (Not talking about a low carb diet - I dont think I'd be able to do that one).

Until I started using MFP I had no idea that my diet was high in carbs. I'm not a fruity person ( lol) - if you know what I mean. Apples make me hungry, oranges are nice but dont satisfy any cravings or fill me up, bananas are okay but they are carbs, grapes are lovely but again dont satisfy.

I'm not a big meat fan either... the occasional chicken or fish is about it.

Anyone?

Vegetables :) They are low in cal. and due to much fiber per serving size, they are slowly used by the body.
Start by slowly lowering the carbs intake (eg 5% per week), until you reach around 55% of the total income / day.

In fact, carbs are the only nutriment we could "play" with. while fat and proteins require amount you cannot skip.
Regarding the need to eat carbs, also try to avoid the ones with high glycemic index, with them, the insulin lower quickly the glycogen level into the body and makes you "tired" (this explains why you need to rest after hig-carbs meals --> glycogen regulation by insulin). by eating low-glycemic index carbs (pastas, oatmeals) you avoid huge glycogen kicks, and thus the need to constantly eat them :-)

While you lower the carbs, eat more and more vegetables, and eat water, that should work :-)
  • You can customize your settings for your food diary. I personally am doing a low-carb, high-fat diet and have my diary set to my preferred ratios. Just go to the My Home tab and just under that you'll see "Goals". Click that, then it will tell you what your current goals are. You can then click "Change Goals" and set it to what feels right.

As far as over-shooting carbs goes, a lot of it is whole-grain and bread products. If you like them and you're seeing results, stick with it, I say. If you wanna change it up and see how it goes, I would recommend more veggies. Spinach sauteed with a little garlic and olive oil is actually surprisingly filling.

I am no expert by any means, but the doctors I work for (cardiologists) have been telling people for years to cut back on carbs. I started this just before Christmas and I would say have had success. I have my carbs set to 120 and sugar to 17 and most days come far bellow it with no problem. I have been eating Joseph's brand products for my bread, choose the ones with whole wheat and flax. They only have 5-8 net carbs per serving:smile: . I do need to limit my fruit to one a day and have been choosing nuts or a cheese stick for my snack. I weigh in tomorrow and think I will have lost 8lb over the past 5 weeks.

    Says who?

What works for some isn't optimal for everyone. I eat much less than that, but I don't call myself a low-carber. I enjoy high protein as that is what works for me.
