Gluten Free Diet - Thoughts, Advice, Information?

I am considering trying a gluten free diet, not for weight loss really but for health reasons. I have a motility disorder and also firbomyalgia and everything that goes along with it. I'm not looking for a cure, simply to feel a little better. I work out plenty - believe me. I am a personal trainer and a fitness instructor plus am currently training for my first 1/2 marathon in 7 weeks. When i was younger, I was anorexic, and no one understood that it was also a physical thing for me. I felt so physically good, when there was no food in my system, no headaches, bloating, shakiness, fogginess, no fluid and swelling in my joints, etc, etc. Of course after a bit I didn't feel so good with no nutrients but I hate the way food makes me feel and think it has to be something I am eating and not just the fact that i am eating. I have heard people say that going off gluten has really helped them but really don't know anyone who has done it. Can anyone help me out here?

  • Hmmmmm..... was hoping for a little more than directing me to Google or Amazon. I know how to do that. I posted this in hopes of some folks on here maybe having some experience with this.

    I had to do it for possible Celiac disease, which turns out, I didn't have. But I was on it twice for 4 months each time. If you do decide to do it, my advice would be to stay away from any foods that replace the real thing. GF breads, pastas, crackers, etc are generally really high in calories - more so than the original food. Your best bet is to eat the perimiter of the grocery store (which we should all do anyway!) Lean meats, low-fat dairy, fruits, veggies and healthy grains like quinoa, millet, amaranth and brown rice. Also, if you're being diligent about it, gluten is hidden in a lot of really random foods like soy sauce and many veggie burgers. I never saw any improvement in my health, but you might. They say you need at least 3 months on the diet to really know if it works for you.

    I went GF and I feel so muchhhhh better! When I do eat gluten I am bloated, upset stomach etc!!! In my opinion gluten doesnt agree with many people. It is so processed now that a lot of people cannot digest it properly and it isnt until people cut it out do they realize that it did affect them.

    My best friend was diagnosed a few years ago with a non-celiac gluten intolerance. She has had fibromyalgia for years. When she is on a gluten free diet, her fibro symptoms are nonexistent. Her daughter has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia and also feels better on a gluten free diet.

    I would definitely suggest the books already recommended.

    My son has celiac, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 2 years old. He's 9 now, and if he accidentally gets gluten, he is in complete misery! Stomach pain and vomitting. I went Gluten free as well when he was diagnosed, and was 3 months pregnant,. I only gained 18 pounds that preg. With my 4 others I averaged 28.

    We eat like grandpa, meat, potato, vegtables. We do eat rice occasionally, and some pasta, but rarely. The pasta is pretty good. We don't like corn pasta, we stick with brown rice. It's high glycemic though, so with his diabetes, we tend to stick with meat and veggies. We eat yogurt and fruit as well. If you need any recipes or ideas please add me as a friend and I can message you some of our favorites.
