It's minor, but it's a big deal Eating the ExerCals!

....I'm starting to comfortably eat more of my exercise calories. I was trying to avoid it and then thought, "what the heck". I'm trying to make this a lifelong change. And I KNOW I'll never due it if I keep treating it like a diet and eat so little every day. I'm 5'10" for the love of pete! And as my doctor said ,"you're not a petite person...even if you were thin, you'd not be petite, so just be healthy" (I know this sounds like a backwards compliment, but I got his message). So, after finally getting my head wrapped around it (I have to psych myself up for these things), I decided to throw caution to the wind and eat more. I still leave some of my exercise calories untouched, but that's not bad. So Yea, Me!

ps....so far so good...yes, I am still losing weight even with eating more. After this week I'll know better, but it even seems I've accelerated my weight loss in the past week. BOOM! Take THAT saddle bags!!!!! (I hope no one on here calls themselves saddle bags)

Could you maybe message me to tell me if in a few weeks you still lose the same amount of weight? When I have about 10-15 more pounds to go, I'm going to slowly ease myself into eating more and more of my exercise calories. I'm not going to lie - psychologically, it scares me.

It totally scares me to. I'm afraid of my exercise calories :) I would also LOVE to know how that works out for you!

    But..but...but..
    Tam...
doesn't it make a difference what those exercise calories are? If I have 400 calories left & eat them in cookies & ice cream, is it better than skipping them?

  • I always eat my exercise calories, and still always lose weight. I burn on average 600 calories a day for my workout, and so add that to the 1,770 it says I should eat for a total of 2,370. I almost always eat the full amount within about 100 calories, and still have very easily lost my goal, and often surpassing it, on a weekly basis.

I've read a lot of literature on exercise calories, and they all come to the same conclusion. If you aren't eating enough calories, your body is going to go into starvation mode and store your calories as fat instead making them available for energy.

    EAT UP!!!

When I first started, I was afraid to eat mine too. But after about 2 weeks, I decided if it works for others why not me... so I starting eating them. I leave about 100-200 on the days where I'm not so sure about the calories intake. Then on days I know for sure I eat all of it. So far I went from 180 (start 3-24-09) to 150.8 (weigh today, 6-2-09). I went from a size 16 down to a 10. I even fit some size 8 now.

A suggestion to those afraid to start eating the exercise calories.....start slow. I started eating anywhere from 50-100 add'l calories a day. Then I after several days, I added another 50-100 calories a day. I did this by having a mini Luna bar before I work out in the morning (80 calories) and I've now added an afternoon snack (usually cashews, 1 oz). In one week of doing this, I've lost 2.5 pounds, which is more than I was averaging per week before I started increasing my calories. I don't know if this rate will continue, but I definately feel more in control. I'm not afraid to eat!!! What a nice thing. By the way, I work out 5 days a week, and expend around 600 calories per session, according to my HRM. All I can say is try it! Have a good day!
