What is a good number for sodium intake? People have suggested I watch mine, but I'm always way under the MFP goal.

    It depends.
USDA adjusted numbers for a specific group of people to 1500 mg a day while leaving the "Rest of us" at 2300mg.
I no longer ADD salt to my foods, the other spices totally wipe out the need for that "flavouring" so the salt I get is in the foods I eat, and it's pretty easy to get a lot of it the more processed foods you're getting.
That said I did adjust my personal goal to 2000 mg, a good balance between the lower limit and something to work towards cutting it, 4K+ sodium days used to be around a lot.
  • The National Health and Medical Research Centre’s (NHMRC) suggested dietary target advises that adults should aim to consume no more than 4g of salt a day (or 1,600mg of sodium) in order to prevent chronic disease. The Heart Foundation advice is that all people should at least reduce their salt intake to less than 6g of salt a day (approximately 2,300mg of sodium a day) as a first step towards reaching the recommended levels.

Not sure where MFP gets their goal sodium figures from but they seem quite high.
