Zumba for the uncoordinated

Sorry if this has been posted/asked in the past.

I'm thinking of giving Zumba a shot, maybe on my own first at home, and then maybe a class in person? I'm terribly uncoordinated though and easily frustrated by that fact.

Can anyone share their experience/advice for a potential newbie?

You don't need to be tremendously coordinated. The songs are usually very repetitive so by the end of each song you should be feeling more confident with it. And when the song comes around again next week you'll feel *really* confident and far more coordinated.

I'd take a couple of classes before buying a game or DVD set. Oh! There are loads of examples of routines on YouTube, so search for zumba versions of your favourite songs and give them a go.

I go to Zumba 5 days a week. I absolutely love it! When I first started, I was in the back and was lost as anything. My super coordinated 17-yo daughter was in the front row wowing everyone with her ability to catch on to the steps and look adorable doing it. :^/ She did NOT get it from her mother. Or her father, for that matter! Fortunately, for my first class, I had a super sweet teacher who advised the new people to "work on the feet first, then add the arms later after you get the feet down" but she advised us all that the main thing was to KEEP MOVING!

In my Zumba classes (three different teachers, many different people in the various classes), there are the coordinated ones, the ones who have been there a lot and have finally picked up on the moves (that'd be me - I can do it, but I don't look like a pro) and the ones who do stuff that doesn't look AT ALL like what the teacher is doing, but they keep coming, keep moving, and are losing weight and toning up!

Going to the classes has been so motivating for me. I've made friends and people ask about me if I missed a class. It is motivating to keep going if you know that the little elderly Ms. Valorie will be looking for you and wondering if you're okay if you're not there. :flowerforyou: I love that in our class there is a variety of people - different body sizes and types, different ages from teenagers to grandmas and everything in between. The main thing is we have LOTS of fun!

Go! You'll love it! Don't worry about being uncoordinated. Try to catch onto the foot movements first and even if not, just keep moving!

LOL! omg I started zumba a few days ago. I am the worst dancer. Seriously... the worst. I used to be a dancer, but I got hit by a car whilst roller skating and I totally lost my groove. True story. I like zumba tho. I have dvd's and they break down all the steps into "easy beats" it makes it way easy. Give it a try, I bet you'll like it and it might even help with coordination.
  • Give it a shot! You'll love it! The best thing about Zumba is that you're encouraged to do it your own way. The DVDs are a great start, but nothing beats an in-person class. Everyone there is worried about their own coordination! I seriously can't even notice anyone else in the class because I'm concentrated on not messing up (and it helps that my teachers turn off the lights).
  • Thank you all for the encouragement! I'm definitely going to check it out.
