Hot chocolate protein

Anybody tried making hot cocoa out of chocolate protein? Maybe mix it up and heat it up?

It sounds like a good idea on this cold snowy day, but I can imagine it could also turn out quite awful.

I've done it. It foams up and tastes... interesting. But it's not horrid. Give it a try.

My trick: heat almond (or normal milk), then mix the protein into the hot milk. Don't mix first and then heat- controls the foam and reduces the strange taste.

You can't use water that's too hot, it will denature the proteins in the powder. I tried it with boiling water once and it turned to nasty curd.

they say heating protein powder removes some of the protein and nutrients from it... I dunno... heard it both ways, kinda conflicting.

I like to put it in coffee every once in awhile or in oatmeal. Though what I do is add the protein after the beverage or oatmeal has been heated.

    Hi,
I love making mochas with Chocolate protein powder, I make a paste with protein powder, coffe grandules and a little water thrn slowly add the hot water. Great when you just need a sweet hit, I also add a little milk and splenda.

The proteins will denature, which just means they unfold. You don't actually lose any of the protein though- it doesn't leave the system, if that makes sense. It just changes shape.

Since the pH in your stomach also denatures proteins... it's probably doesn't effect their nutritional value. I'm guessing it just effects taste/texture.

Yep...this is true. You either want to use warm water from the tap or make your cocoa and let it cool to under 130 degrees, or the protein will curdle.

    Thanks for the replies!

I'm a little afraid to try it now, with the curddling and calling it an interesting flavor  Maybe if I get brave I'll add a spoonfull or two to a regular mug of cocoa (once it cools down, of course!)
  • We have developed a hot chocolate product where the protein will not De-nature with hot water launching in October in the US. It also is not sweetened with Aspartame. It is delicious, and hands down the best Protein + Hot Chocolate out there

I do have some samples and product available prior to launch:
