Slimming World...without the group?!

Hey,
I have been reading up on slimming world's diet plan. I like how wholegrains, fruits, lean proteins and veggies are unlimited. And how there's no calorie counting, and room for extras.
Unfortunately I am a struggling student. I work too and have a house and family to take care of. So I do not have the time or money to go to the group meetings. But I would really like to follow the plan.
I know its 10-15 Syns a day - but I have no idea what Syns are for and how to calculate them. So I was thinking of allowing a calorie allowance for the extras, that I can use in one day or save it up and use at the weekend. I was thinking about 250-300cals a day. What do you think?
I know Slimming World now do "Body Magic" which is the exercise part of the diet. So I am going to start doing more of that.
Is there anything I haven't included in my make-shift SW diet? And is this basically how it works?
(Never been to WW or SW, so I'm not sure if I'll miss out on the group talks. But I like using the forums on here and will continue to log food. I just think my calories might be a bit out.)
