A quick Google search will lead you to some pretty good videos and articles, actually, but the cause is the running. Gotta work on strengthening calf muscles and the anterior tibialis (walk around on your toes and heels, after you've warmed up, for a while). And STRETCH, STRETCH, STRETCH.
To get RID of the pain, I saw a YouTube vid recommending rolling your foot over a golf ball and then using a foam roller and rolling your calves and shins over it. My massage therapist managed to get rid of mine this week (using stones to tap on the connective tissue just to the side of the shin bone itself). Ice works okay short term, but it doesn't really get rid of the pain.0 -
Treat with RICE- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. You HAVE to rest!! I had shin splints bad from running during a deployment. One thing you always should do is check your shoes. I could not get new ones while deployed, but I could do other treatments. Rest and let them heal. Shin splints are actually tiny tears where your connective tissue joins with your bone. It is peeled up layers of bone. No wonder they are so painful right? But they do not go away with out rest and healing time.
Get a gait check. Most running stores offer it. They can tell you if you over or under pronate and help you find shoes to prevent shin splints. They'll recommend certain brands/types/styles of shoes for your particular foot shape.
Please rest them. If you think they are bad now, what until you leave for the army. All the PT and marching in boots, they have a big potential to be much worse.0 -

I am by no means an expert of any kind.. but i was getting bad shin splints and when I bought properly fitting running shoes, they cleared up instantly. Go to a real running store.
So now, my husband was getting HORRIBLE shin splints.. we finally went up to the running store, he got fitted for proper shoes.. and BAM- no more issues.
They can evaluate your stride and get you something good and it makes a world of a difference.0
