Can someone recommend a lean protein powder that is good for shakes after doing strength training? Do you drink it daily, or only on days that you do weights? What about cardio days? Also, is it a meal supplement or not? Where can I buy it?

Thanks! I was drinking Shakeology, but I haven't gotten any results from it and for the $$, I'm just not satisfied. So, let me know what you have been successful with!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by lean protein powder.. As far as I know, they are either Whey, Soy or Hemp.

I personally drink Myofusion by Gaspari Nutrition.. and I think it tastes pretty good.

I drink them on days I strength train if I need it(I try to get enough protein from food) and on days I'm low on calories.. it's a good calorie filler.

Its called a supplement for a reason, it supplements your diet with added protein. There are also protein powders that are meal replacements. But those will have more fat and probably more carbs. Many protein powders will be "lean", if by that you mean low in fat.

I drink one after my workouts, which just so happens to be everyday. Optimum Nutrition is my protein of choice.

Why for women? Protein is protein is protein. Women aren't going to metabolize it any differently than men.

The "leanest" you are going to get is something like isolated whey without anything else added... and that's going to be 4 calories per gram. Always. No way around it. You'll probably eat about 30 grams per shake, so count on 120 grams per shake, give or take. And that's only if you dissolve it in water. Milk will add extra calories.

P.S. What do you mean by 'results'? What are you hoping for in a protein supplement?

There are two main types of protein supplements, whey and caesin. Whey protein is fast digesting protein, which is most effectively used before and after weight training. Caesin is a slow digesting protein which can be taken first thing in the morning, or more effectively right before bed. Make sure you stay away from weight gainers, which are packaged similar to protein powder.

Now onto recomendations, you can go buy a tub of protein for $15 or $70. Some have a lot of sugar, some have little. Some taste good, some taste horrible. Some mix well, others are clumpy. You'll just have to try out different powders. Most companies, if you call them, will send a free sample. Here are the proteins I've used in the past:

Body Fortress Whey Protein - Found at Kroger, Target, Walmart, and other retailers. Its only $13-$18 a tub and mixes well. I use this currently due to finances.

ON Whey - Mixes great, tastes great, found online and at GNC. You can pay anywhere from $35-$60 a tub.

Muscle Milk - You can find it at GNC or online. Its the best tasting protein, mixes a little clumpy, but has a lot of sugar. You can get it for $35-$50 a tub.
  • Muscle Milk by CytoSport makes a Light version which has fewer calories than the regular. I usually drink that one and use water. I take it after every workout regardless of what kind of exercise. Muscle Milk chocolate is the only protein shake I can stomach. I've tried a bunch of different brands and flavors, but I'm really picky. LOL

I have this as well. I take it sometimes after workouts if I dont have BCAA powder otherwise I take it if I need a filler for protein for the day.

I use Optimum nutrition, too. The Double Rich Chocolate. Mixes well, tastes awesome w/skim milk. I add a tbsp of peanut butter and blend if I am craving something really sweet after a workout (tastes like a peanut butter cup - yum!). I drink them after lifting also after really hard cardio/circuit training sessions, so mostly every day.

My husband and I drink the double chocolate as well. We just mix our with water. Sometimes I make it as my meal and use a blender and add water and fruit with it. If I'm coming under my calories for that day, I use it as a quick meal/snack replacement.
  • I buy this because it can easily be added to anything and dissolves instantly. I actually add it to my bowl of cereal & Milk. It is not flavored and is pure protein though.

almost any protein powder on the market is what you would consider "lean" or low in calories.. Most of which contain 120-150 calories, about 20-30g/pro, little to none in fat and carbs. I would say ON gold standard whey is a great option but do your research and see what you like the most.

you should never subsitute a shake for a whole meal since its insuficient in macro nutrients, Instead have it has a snack or pre/post workout shake, you can take it various times a day or just on training days however your preference might be. I take mine pre and sometimes post workout and as a snack throughout the day with like a fruit or something

My drug, I mean protein of choice is Isopure Whey Protein Isolate. I mix mine with water after a lifting workout and as a midday snack with carbs/fats.
