So I take a ton of spinning classes at the gym. Usually 5 days a week. But I am looking for something to mix it up a bit. I have always wanted to be a "runner" not sure how to start the whole process tho. Although I am in pretty good cardiovascular shape from spinning running is a lot different and uses different muscles so I am secretly scared ha!!

    Couch-to-5K. (C25K)!

You can read about it here on some of the forums, or google it for more info. I believe coolrunning.com has the program plan.

Basically it's a 9 week program, running/walking 3 times per week. It starts you out slowly and builds you up to 30 minutes of running! Check it out!

Couch to 5k is the best. I started it in August, ran my first 5k on Thanksgiving and am doing a half marathon in 7weeks. The I always hated it before, I never thought I'd love running.

Yeah, either C25k, or just take it slowly. Do some pyramids if you're on a treadmill (walk 5, walk-incline 5, jog-incline 5, run 10, walk 5) and gradually add more time to the running and less to the rest. Or just gradually build up your endurance by straight running, finding a level that is intense but not so intense that you can't continue for a good amount of time.

I am 282 lb and I am finishing the 3rd week tomorrow of the c25k! It's a great program and it's an "easy" way to train for a 5k in March!

I didn't start losing weight until I started running and biking. All summer long all I did was bike and run. I only went to the gym once or twice all summer. I have done three 5k's and am doing one every month now. That seems to motivate me to keep doing it. i know when I first started my lower back was sore for a while. I still ice my ankles and knees. My sister did the couch to 5k and had great results. I think this would be an easy transaction for you with all your spinning classes you have done. I can also tell you that running on a tread mill is a lot easier than running outside. So perhaps that would be a good place to start. Take it easy and good luck.

The best quote I ever heard- and I have no idea where it came from was "you are a runner if you think you're a runner." Whether it's sprinting 100 meters or jogging a 5k or training for a marathon you can be a runner. Just strap on some good trainers, mp3 player/ ipod in and run.

Whether you reach the end of your road (if you're spinning 5 days a week that'll be easy) or 10miles later forgot where you were aiming for. As of that first step- YOU ARE A RUNNER!
  • Thanks guys appreciate it!!! I will look up the couch to 5k program for sure :)
