I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy this new fangled device, but I have a couple of questions:

Do you really need the chest band thingy or will a normal HRM watch do?

If I buy the Polar FT7, do I NEED the Polar Flowlink Data Transfer thingummy? Will my Polar FT7 connect to the laptop without it?

Thanks in advance

  • I have an FT40, but can answer your questions.

Yes, you need the chest strap. That's what transmits your HR to the watch.

Yes, if you want to download your info to the computer (polar's online account) for tracking, you need the polar link.

    I love my polar!

    Thank you :flowerforyou:

I was hoping you'd say no about the linky, lol. So expensive!

I know that if you don't have the link you can manually enter the information in, but that can be a bit tedious. But it's up to you. I love my Polar FT7 and you'll find that you'll hardly notice the chest strap after a while. :)

    Looking at prices now. Yikes!
About £170 seems to be the average for both together :ohwell:

it shouldn't be £170. I just bought a polar FT7 for £70 and the flowlink is available on Amazon for £30. For the record the FT7 seems excellent.

I own a Polar FT40. you will want one with a chest strap. much more accurate than the ones w/o. Infact I don't think Polar makes one that doesn't have a strap

I have both... no, the uplink isn't critical, since what it will do is upload to the Polar site, and you'll have to transfer that to MFP to track it here.

You can just LOOK at the watch part, and see the time, calories burned, etc., and key it in here directly.

The best part about having the FT7, is the chest band.. because if you should happen to go somewhere and use exercise equipment (a gym, a hotel workout room, etc.), the equipment often will be able to read the info, and give you that data right on the display!
