I thought I was getting in shape, but . . .

then I tried climbing up the stairs to my friend's walk-up apartment. There were three, if not four, flights of stairs. I carried my 24" suitcase with me (not too heavy this time 'round). By the time I got to the top, I felt like I reached my maximum heart rate and was to the point where I could not talk without stopping to catch my breath.
Now, mind you, I have finished week 2 of C25K and made it through at least a week of 30 Day Shred. I've broken a sweat and never had this experience whatsoever. I feel fine when I do either of those.
What happened? And, how can I "train" my body to be able to handle such exertion as a few flights of stairs?
Thank you for your thoughts.

Your body gets used to the motion of running, but walking up stairs and bearing weight are both strenuous. Don't be too hard on yourself!0

See, I am not a fan of these videos. I can never keep up with the fast paced moves. Though, give me a stairclimber and I keep going and going. So, perhaps it is just an individual thing. I'd be interested in hearing other people's answers.0 -
We tend to do best at what we've been training at, but if you have a good base of fitness, you should be able to pick up the new activity quickly. For example, I was running for a long time, and when I started riding a bicycle it kicked my *kitten* the first few times....0

New activities are always brutal. My vote is, cut yourself some slack today, then tomorrow start climbing those stairs like it's nobody's business. If they still kick your butt by the end of February? Well, maybe then you can fuss...
And for the record? Stair climbing is one serious crush of a workout. You did just fine. Keep working on them, though!0 -
Same here. I can run 10 miles, but I can barely last 15 minutes on an elliptical. I don't know how people do it :frown:then I tried climbing up the stairs to my friend's walk-up apartment.
