Like most people I started my resolution to lose weight. Mostly thanks to the latest Christmas pictures that show very unflattering weight gain. I have been working out for a solid month, I started before the 1st, and though I have lost and inch around my waist, the scale has not budged. What gives?

I'm 5.6'' with 39/29/40 and the smallest I have ever managed to get to is 28'' waist. However my hips were not quite so large, that's a recent development. Thanks to loads of thigh workouts and hip exercises I gained inches. Does anyone know what's going on?

Last year I was able to drop to 127 easily, and within two months. Though this year... Yeah, I'm just so confused. Any thoughts?

What have you been doing differently since Christmas to lose weight? I read a study once that stated the extra holiday food we eat between Thanksgiving and New Years takes us an average of 9 months to burn off following our normal routine. That by reducing and watching what you eat those two months could put you ahead for the year.
  • Well, my family was too poor to celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas this year, food wise. But I have been working out at least 5 times a week for at least half an hour. My intake is never higher than 1000 calories, which is bad I know, but I'm really poor and since I work all the time I don't get much time to eat.

If you're working out and only consuming 1000 calories - your body is probably not getting enough nutrients. It isn't getting the proper nutrition it needs in order to feel comfortable enough to lose weight. I understand not having a lot of money - but there are ways to get proper nutrition on a smaller budget. You have to work at it, but it is possible.
  • Is there a poor college student food budget here? It probably doesn't help that I forget to eat. I hate food to be honest. It just doesn't taste that great to me.

There's the problem. If your stats are correct.
    BMR 1524.05.
    TDEE 2352

You are eating below what your suggested BMR is. And while it might be 10% off, you are still way below.

So now your body has adjusted its metabolism to deal with the too little food you are giving it.

So you have a serious choice to make.

Keep using this method, except now you'll need to lower calories even more, and your body will follow. And you can keep doing this, get discouraged, every bing will add on weight, you it will ultimately fail, or your hair and nails will stop growing, organs will be messed up, brain will be cloudy, ect.

    or

Get those calories up to above BMR, like 1800.

And your exercise calories, unless you are eating them back but doesn't sound like it, are just robbing needed energy for basic body functions to use for that exercise.

Make that exercise nothing more than light walking if you really can't get the calories up because of funds.
Examine that food budget to discover if there are cheaper options for some decent calorie food. And remember, fat is needed by your body, and provides of course great calories.
As long as you are eating less than your body burns, you can lose weight.

Oh, coming out of this state of killing your metabolism will result in some weight gain, as your body is ready to store everything as energy and keep the metabolism at the same low. It may take several weeks to move it higher.

Classic side effect of lowered and messed up metabolism.
  • Well, that's actually really helpful! I was starting to freak out.
So, cut back on the workouts till I can get my carb intake up? Also, how long after getting it up would I have to wait before going back to my workouts?

Cut 20% off TDEE and you will lose 1 lb a week. Reason is the human body can only metabolize so much fat a day. After that it turns to damaged proteins...thats muscle babe!
So eating that low will catabolize muscle.
Also you could be damaging your vital organs eating 400 calories below BMR.
BMR is how much calories you would need in s coma to keep vital organs operating correctly.

    Bump up calories!
You already know your dietary numbers.
Cut 20% from TDEE and get those macros in!
  • God, I'm glad I found you guys. This really explains a lot.

I would balance those carbs with protein and fat. Protein items will be more expensive, carbs cheaper, but fat is usually cheaper.

What is two servings of 4% milkfat cottage cheese and a Yoplait Whips? There's a 400 cal meal almost.

Find some cheap ways to load up on calories if you need to. Even if it means eating 'crap' to some degree - break out the dark chocolate, pizzas or anything you can stomach. Try and buy pasta and rice in bulk too - usually works out very cheap per serving and will help you load up on carbs.
  • LOL, last time I tried regular pasta my body wasn't exactly happy with me. Though I just got a bunch of those Lean Cuisine Bags and I love those. I also have a ton of Luna Bars, will that help with protein matters?

Well, they claim to have more protein that what I don't know, but they really aren't that high at all. Some cheese sticks to eat along with them would.
  • Cheese sticks. ^^ I can do that. I love cheese.

Curious as to what the verdict is on this? What are you doing differently now to make weight loss sustainable?

On the topic of protein bars, if you arent used to processing soy protein id stay away from it.
That stuff can turn to concrete in your gut real fast if you dont hydrate.
Your *kitten* will thank you later.
  • LOL.

Well, I have taken to eating considerably more, though some days I still forget, and end up skipping a meal on accident. I've lightened up on the workouts. I rarely breech more than 1200 calories a day, sadly. But I am trying. I drink more water than I used to, and well, I know there are a few other things but I can't think of them at the moment..

Stay away from soy, got it. (:
