If you hold on to the sides or handles of the treadmill while you run, is it cheating?

If you are placing a hand there for BALANCE, not cheating. If you are like some people I've seen who practically drape their upper body weight over the handles or are virtually holding themselves up like the handles are parallel bars in gymnastics so they are merely running their legs like little hamsters with no weight on them, totally cheating.

all depends on the why you are placing your hands on them... you do get a better workout if your total body is engaged in the walking or running...

I put my hands on them for balance. Last time I tried to change a song on my phone while I was on it, I flew off the back end. I have terrible balance on it, but I have no other choice when it is freezing outside. I can run faster when I am on the road, so I don't think it can be cheating that much. Just wondering what every one else thought.

I never hold on, whether walking or running. The only time I have grabbed the handrails is if I have been doing interval training and basically, have run myself into the ground. I sometimes need to get my balance when I walk inbetween reps in those cases.

If anybody has problems on the treadmill when they don't hold on, it is usually just a lack of confidence, the more you do it, the easier it becomes for sure. Just walk normally and don't try to go too fast, too soon.

I hold onto the treadmill and the elliptical. I don't give a crap if anybody laughs or thinks it's wrong. I'd rather not fall off.

Only when I have the incline at 10 and I'm about wore out, then I'll grab the front with 2 fingers on each hand to try and stay on.
