Doing a 14day fast from meat and bread. Having hard time getting up to 1200 calories a day. Any tips on healthy calories.. I don't want to load my body up with junk food. Any tips on tasty foods without meat or bread. Wanted to do Veggie burgers but they contain wheat gluten =( If anyone could offer some advice I'd appreciate it.

Out of curiosity, why are you fasting from meat and bread? Do you have a medical condition?

beyond that, you could make some mega vegetable stirfrys with healthy oils like olive oil. and throw in some nuts.

what about cheese? like on broccoli or other vegetables?

olive oil (add it to any and everything)
    Avocado
have a glass of juice (drink some calories, will not fill you up as much)
Nuts, seeds, and/or dehydrated fruit are healthy and full of calories

Doing it out of support for my girlfriend and her church. I've never fasted before so I wasn't aware of how much bread there is in several foods.
  • Beans, nuts, avocados....

I've added peanut butter to my snacks , still coming up 400 shy of 1200. Anything other than nuts, I'm not a big fan of them.
  • Allrecipes has a great recipe for Ratatouille. Its a veggie filled dish. The recipe I found was baked in a casserole dish. It is large so I always have leftover. It calls for eggplant which is really good at absorbing flavors so I always add rotel to my dish. Good luck!

I've changed my diet to no red meats and no white starches (pasta, potatoes, etc) It can be tough but you will love the difference in how you feel. As for getting your daily calories, try high calorie healthy foods. I have half an avocado almost every day and it's about 150ish calories. I mix it with Tuna instead of mayo, chop it into a salad, or mix it with some salsa as a healthy guacamole. Nuts are also a great idea. My mom tosses some in her morning oatmeal.

My husband just did a vegan challenge (2 weeks) and he ate a lot of vegetables (veggie soup for many meals), fruits, black bean burgers plus peanut butter and lots of trail mix with nuts and dried fruits.

Soy/tofu! Hit the natural aisle at the supermarket, they've got tons of varieties and meat substitutions.

Adding a hard-boiled egg to a salad, or cheese or full-fat dressing, will help you hit your calorie intake.

Are you banning meat products or just meat? Milk might help up the anty and help with the protein.

Last April, I ate only veggies and EVOO for 2 weeks. I didn't count calories at the time, but I'm sure I was well under 1,000 calories each day (I was probably around 500 calories daily). I ate veggies all sorts of ways....raw, salads, stir fry (loved me some stir fry), cooked, etc. The key with this type of cleanse is the mindset. If you convince yourself that you can rock the cleanse, then you will rock it. the second key is that if you are hungry, just eat more veggies. don't feel like you have to limit the amount of veggies you eat. you don't. and, yes, use EVOO as your salad dressing and to cook the stir fry. drink a ton of water.

If you don't like nuts, use beans and peas. Try some no meat chili! Use beans and veggies, like potatoes, peas, green beans. Fantastic chili, just make a homemade chili that you like and omit the meat, use cheese and chili mix. If the mix has real meat flavoring, make a chili mix with chili powder and a few ingredients, find a recipe. Once you make the chili you like, make a big pot of it. Eat some, freeze the rest in serving size containers. Great stuff!

Just going without the meat and that includes fish. And going without bread.. Dairy products are fine! Eggs are usually what I will eat for breakfast.

You can substitute quorn for meat, you can buy bags of quorn mince to make bolognese shepherds pie etc. It also comes in veggie substitute dishes like burgers, sausage, chicken breast substitutes, I don't know about the gulten in these things though.

I don't eat bread at all so that one is easy to give up but I eat meat at every meal. I love meat so it would be a hard fast for me which is what a religious fast is supposed to be hard so that you pray and think about why you're doing it. I would eat more cheese, nuts and eggs to get the calories.

beans, beans, beans! I make my own hummus (it's super simple) and use it as a dip for veggies. I make a brocolli, cannellini bean and cheese soup (14oz chix (you could use vegetable) broth and 1C water brought to a boil, add 1lb chopped broccoli and cook 8 mins; add 1 can cannellini beans and salt and pepper to taste and cook an additional minute; puree soup with 1C sharp shredded cheese. I use a handheld immersion blender, a food processor or blender would work fine especially since you have cooked the crap out of the broccoli! lol). Black bean soup can be made without ham, refried beans (you could make "tacos" with lettuce leaves).

I also add guacamole to EVERYTHING!!!! I love it.

I recommend happyherbivore.com - it has a ton of vegan recipes that are SUPER simple (I'm not a cook and don't like having to buy a million ingredients that I will never use again for one dish). I'm not vegan, so I just modify them slightly if need be.
