my 10 year old brother has ADHD (same as ADD), apart from its more hyperactivity!
hes had it since he was 3. when he was toddler - the ovbious signs of ADHD were not been able to sit still for more than 10 seconds, he'd be off like a shot, he couldnt make eye contact with either me or my mum when we ttrying to speak to him, his eyes and head were all over the place. when he was attending nursery - the staff even noticed some odd things he would do and nothing like what the other children were doing - he would throw food around the room, scream at other kids for no reason etc:laugh:
mum got him to see a doctor - later on, when he was 3 n half years old he got diagnosed with ADHD. ever since then hes been on medication to help control his anger/hyperactivity! he is still very hyper now if hes not carefull what he eats! He's not allowed any sweets with colours in or any food/drink products with 'Sodium Benzoate' as that makes him very hyper!
my brother also finds it hard to concentrate in school, and has to have 1 to 1 support on a daily basis.
i would book a dr's appointment for your son, and see what they reckon the best thing to do.. Dr's might even put him on Ritalin tablets, just to help him concentrate a little better whilst in school. x0 -
From a teacher's point of view, I've seen a lot of kids with ADD/ADHD. Most of the ones on "herbal" or "vitamin" treatments show no improvement. Now, a lot of things could factor into it, like whether or not the parent is giving the herbs/vitamins regularly (because most of these treatments require you to keep a balanced amount in your system).
If it were my child, I would research ALL available options, but ultimately, I would rely heavily on a doctor's opinion when it comes to what I am putting in my child's body.0 -
I was just diagnosed with ADHD inattentiveness last week. I was put on Adderall XR. It has been helping me have the motivation to do homework, but besides that I feel pretty normal. I was given a very low dosage.
If you have some questions about my experience so far, feel free to message me.0 -
My daughter is ADD (with a slight bit of hyperactivity but not enough to be ADHD)and ODD (oppositional defiance disorder) I have tried a few over the counter herbal things to help with her focus but not much worked or I couldn't her to take it. I put off Doctor prescribed medication as long as I could but when she almost failed 2nd grade because she wouldn't sit to do her work , I had her evaluated for medication. She is on the Daytrana patch and it seems to be helping at least at school.0

Both my children have adhd. Before moving to medication with both of them I tried many herbal supplements and the strict feingold diet for 1 year. I think out of everything the Feingold diet helped but not enough.
My opinion would be to try the Feingold diet and see if it helps or atleast try cutting out all HFCS, food with any dyes (red, blue, yellow) and eating as "natural" or "whole" as possible. We also did fish oil supplements. Good luck0 -
I was diagnosed in high school. My parents filled me full of Ritalin. I seem to remember it helping a little.
Does your kid usually have 1 or 2 things they focus on with fierce intensity?0 -

My 10 yo was diagnosed at age 6 with ADHD. Before then I really thought ADHD was a BS diagnosis. But I knew something was very wrong so I had her properly assessed. and was shocked at the diagnosis. Looking back everything makes sense. I put her on meds but it took over a year to find the right med and dose, which required a lot of patience and heartache, but once we found the right medication for her everything changed. She went from being an unhappy child who couldn't keep friends and was struggling in school to a very happy well adjusted child, tons of close friends and excelling at school. The improvement has been nothing short of stunning. I have not once second guessed my decision to medicate. That would be equivalent to a choice between letting my child suffer or enjoying her childhood.
The only side effects she has had are twofold:
1) She eats very little during the day. Solvable by giving her a big breakfast and she eats tons in the evening. She is still on the low side of normal for bodyweight and the doctor is monitoring her growth and is satisfied she is growing as she should.
2) The first couple of years she had trouble falling asleep. We started giving her melatonin most nights with the doctor's blessing and it has helped tremendously.
Kids with untreated ADHD have significantly poorer long term outcomes.0 -
I was diagnosed with ADD just recently.
Imo herbal remedies and other "snake oils" aren't going to help your son one bit.
A professional diagnosis, along with a course of behavioral therapy and/or medication will.
If you really think he may have ADD take him to a reputable psychiatrist and start working on it while he's young because it could negatively affect his teen and adult life if you wait. People aren't as understanding of an adult with ADD as they are of a child.0 -

THIS x 1000.
The sooner you address the situation the less likely it is to develop into larger behavioural problems. I should have also added that while we were adjusting medication doses I also had her taken to a Clinical Psychologist (a specialist in child psychology) who did an 8 week assessment on her. She concurred with the doctor and the Psychiatrist's diagnosis, but also found generalized anxiety disorder and she was learning disabled due to a poor working memory. I was given a huge report with recommendations for home and school. I put her through an anger management group (which was brilliant) and a childrens' anxiety group.
She does not require any accommodations at school now that she has developed coping skills. It's not enough just to medicate, you need to give your child the tools to cope effectively as well.0 -
I was diagnosed with ADD when I was 9 years old, however now they tell me I have ADHD. As a kid I was never treated with Meds but now I take Meds, it makes a world of difference to me. When I was younger my mom tried changing my diet a few tomes depending on what new studies shed read concerning the subject, and having me do cognitive exercises provided by the neropsychologist who the school brought in to diagnose me. None of that really helped me at all. I actually almost dropped out of school when I was a sophomore out of sheer frustration and lack of confidence in my ability to finish. Thankfully I had an IEP teacher who really cared about me and she to me to see the vocational courses available to juniors and seniors. She talked me into staying at least long enough to give vocational classes a shot. I did and it is only because the vocational class I choose was hands on, that I excelled and graduated highschool. It was a 2 period long class and I had a 99% average all yr junior and senior yr. With out vocational class I think I would have failed out of highschool even if I didn't drop out. I tried college after highschool, flunked out and was put on academic suspension. Thats when I knew i needed help, I went to my doc and asked if he could give me meds and he did. At that point I tried college again and passed with flying colors. I feel like, had i not been stubborn when i was younger, had i tried meds... Maybe i would have my dream job by now instead of a job i can barely stand/pay the bills with. I am not saying that ur child will suffer my fate if u don't try medication, I simply wanted to share my story to give you a personal experience/ point of view. Good luck with whatever you try0

They diagnosed my middle daughter with ADD and wanted to put her on Ritalin. I refused.
I'm sure there are many kids out there with actual ADD, but I would question it. Seems to me that sometimes the ultimate goal is to quiet a child down, so that the system doesn't have to expend as much time with that child. I'm against drugs as an alternative for every problem these days.
Can't sleep? Take a pill. Too fat? Take a pill. Can't concentrate? Take a pill.
There are certainly other avenues to explore before dulling your child's senses with pharmaceuticals.
By the way, my daughter is 28 now and a great Mom, Daughter and Wife. She just needed a little more attention and brain stimulation.0 -
