What happened on last nights Biggest Loser UK. The young man was getting heavily criticised for not working hard enough from everybody. I don't think he did much exercise at all unlike all the others who were dying from exhaustion.
At weigh in the contestants were disappointed they'd not lost much (several cases of 2lbs) and yet the young man had lost a whopping 9lbs. Well, that shut everybody up and no explanation given.

Hm, I wonder if he figured out that working out constantly can make your body retain fluids? I read that on this site before and didn't pay it any mind, but now I think it's absolutely true. Question is, can he maintain that loss or will he now get stuck or even gain?0

The others obviously weren't eating their exercise calories0

He probably 'lost' more because he didnt work out as much, causing less water absorption which happens when your muscles are repairing.
If you ever work out, you will notice a 'bloat' which is temp.
I always weigh more after work outs than before.0 -

I watched this episode and I think he was the only one to eat at the "guess the calories". So I think he is eating while the others are cutting too far back on their food.0

That's the #1 answer why people don't lose weight....they don't eat enough....gotta love it.:devil:0 -

If the others added weight by building muscle and lost 2lb fat from last weeks weigh in, why are they disappointed and the trainers make them feel disappointed. I'd be over the moon.0 -

I need to watch it repeat to see- is it the young Irish guy? I am sure he is only in his late teens- he prob has a higher metabolism than the others maybe?
I would say most of it is down to diet really, yes the intense exercise helps them burn more calories but losing weight is 80% what you put in your mouth. And as someone else said, if you workout shortly before a weigh in, even the night before it will sometimes show a false reading due to water retention on sore muscles making you think you have either lost less than you thought or even gained.0 -
I never saw a weight loss when doing heavy exercise (and in fact gained) and I know now that my loss will be slower because of the amount of exercise i'm doing. It feels almost counter productive, but it really is just water weight and is better for you in the long run. I should imagine that's exactly what happened to the BL guy, I could lose five pounds in a week by just eating right, but if I put that exercise in it'll take a few weeks before there's a loss. That's why binning the scale is important! Just wish the experts on BL would explain the reasoning behind the losses so that it doesn't demotivate people to exercise. Sometimes I think these shows do more harm than good!0

yep i agree wasprobably water retention i have been exercising for last week and only dropped a pound then the other night i had alot to drink and was going toilet every 40 mins lol but next day i weighed and had lost 4 pound overnight .0

I couldn't work it out last week what had happened and that's why I asked.
I understand what people say on here but 9lb.

....and another thing is the fact that I had to come on here for an explanation (of which I am grateful for all the replies as I have learned at lot from them).
Biggest Loser should be explaining this on their show.

The latest Aussie Biggest Loser program is a lot more informative than either the USA or UK shows. They show the "Master Classes" that the contestants have each week. The classes usually include a nutritionist cooking healthier food alternatives, and a sportsman, doctor, or footwear specialist etc. giving them advice. Last week it was on carbs on how they work in the body, how much you need and when to eat them, which varies on whether you are maintaining, dieting, or in training for a big event etc. I find it far more useful than just watching people being flogged to death for hours on end0
