So, I've been eating healthy since early-mid December and have heard lots say that healthy eating is more expensive, so I've been tracking my spending in Jan. We now have everything in the house to last to the end of the month.
It's just hubby and I at home and I think total we're eating at about 3500 calories per day total. We spent $552 on groceries this month (including non-food grocery items like tp and laundry soap) plus spent another $60 on take out (chinese food one night and swiss chalet the other). So out total eating expenses for Jan. was $612. January is long so I counted it as 41/2 weeks, so that makes our weekly eating costs at about $136. I'm in Ontario Canada. Thoughts on whether this is expensive?

IMO the expense of dieting resides in what you choose to eat... It can break the bank if you let it. It doesn't have to though. :flowerforyou:

I have never really kept track of what I spend, but I do know it is not much. I still have meat in the freezer my brother gave me from his farm. I live with my son who often buys his own food, but I cook one hot meal every day for supper and we eat together then. I do know I spend no more than $50 a week because that is simply all I can afford.
Sounds to me like you are doing well. Do you go to the farmers market?
  • For most people, no, it is not a lot of money and it doesn't cost any different to eat healthy vs. unhealthy. However, for extremely poor people who can't even afford $100 a week or less for an entire family of 4, you definitely get more quantity and calories for your buck if you fill up the cart with cheap-o mac & cheese, white bread, PB&J, etc. There are ways around it...frozen veg, etc, but there definitely is a problem with the availability of high quantities of healthy food for an extremely tight budget. I feed my husband and myself for around $100 bucks a week, and we eat mostly fresh veggies and meat. If I had a family to feed, it would rise significantly. Kids eat a lot
