Marinades for stew meat?

I'm going to make stew in the crock tomorrow. Should I marinate the beef in sherry, vodka, brandy, scotch? Or do you have some wicked easy mixture you can share?

I like using dark ale. :) Or red wine. I don't recommend vodka, but that is just me. Out of your four choices I would pick sherry :)

    I second the beer idea.

Though, I never marinate my stew meat because it cooks low and slow anyway. I would just toss in a bit of sherry, a bottle of good, dark beer, or a cup of red wine at the start of cooking.

Consider browning your meat with a bit of paprika and oil before the liquid goes in. If you do this, and add something acidic in the liquid marinating wouldn't be necessary.

Marinade isn't necessary in the crock pot. I usually use broth or stock to cook in. As long as it's covered in liquid, it shouldn't burn.
