Eat more, lose more

I've been on my weight loss journey for a while now and it seems that everytime I increase my calories I lose more which is great. BUT I'm curious I am now eating about 1800-2000 per day how much more calories can I consume and still lose? Will I ever eat too much and start to gain. I would love this concept explained to me I have a really difficult time convincing myself to eat more than this! Thanks all suggestions/opinions appreciated!

I'm no nutrion expert but if you figure out your BMR.. it'll tell you how much you can eat and maintain your weight. I think it's a calculation of your age, weight, and height. Some one correct me if I'm wrong, but that can tell you how much you can eat and not gain.
Here's another question, are you eating back all the calories you burn from exercise?
Here's a link to a BMR calculator.

Not sure how accurate it is. But mine is 1808.9 calories at my age, height, and current weight. This isnt' including exercise I suppose.0 -
Speaking for myself, it's less about how much I eat as what food choices I make.0

Eat 20% below TDEE to lose fat and maintain muscle.
My TDEE is 2500 calories daily im 5'5" 138lbs.
I'm cutting calories to 2k daily and losing 1lb a week without muscle loss.
It also maintains an active metabolism eating this way.0 -
Okay so my BMR is 1489 calories so I get that that's what I need to simply function and maintain. When I exercise I usually eat back a portion or all of my calories. Right now for MFP I'm set to lose .5 lbs per week so my calorie intake is 1850, but this week I have been eating 2000 calories and noticed a huge difference in the scale. I'm just confused if I plateau again when I'm eating 2000 per day is it safe for me to up my intake even more? I really just don't know how many calories to eat per day should my "net' calories be at least 1489 with exercise?0

I recommend eating at maintenance or TDEE for up to a month if you plateau or trying an Intermittent Fasting to break it.0

Now I am really confused! You guys are eating more, and losing weight? I don't understand....0

Absolutely especially when hitting a plateau or doing intense cardio like I do which burns a ton of calories more is much better!0 -

It all comes down to your activity level.
My BMR is on the low side - 1338, but I work on my feet 4-5 days a week. While at work, I am in constant motion. Add in a day or two of working out at the gym and my TDEE is around 2449 (on work/workout days) and 2358 (on non working/non workout days). I can easily consume 2300-2500 NET calories and maintain my weight. I lose weight when I drop down around 2100-2200.
BMR and TDEE calculators aren't set in stone - they are a guess like a lot of other things. But, they will give you a general idea (and they're quite accurate for me) of where to start with your calories. Every once in awhile, I will eat VERY high calories (around 3500/day) just to see how my body reacts to what I'm doing.
It is all about learning what works for YOUR body.
There's no possible way I would lose weight on 1200 calories a day (plus, I'd be a raving lunatic from hunger!). Heck, I didn't lose while in the 1800-1900 range. It was just too low for my body. I truly believe my job plays a HUGE role in my daily calorie needs - even though I don't count it as exercise (my body is used to doing it), it doesn't mean I'm not burning a lot of calories from it.0 -

The human body can only mobilize so much fat in a day.
so eating at a 20% deficit from total daily energy expenditure nets most people appx 1lb lost with lean mass intact.
eating at too much of a deficit can and will slow metabolism and catabolize lean mass.
The more you eat the better metabolism you'll have.
Its simple.0 -
i think its all about nutrition.. not how many calories there's a lot of foods that are very nutritious but extremely low cal, and still keep your energy levels up0
-
I can't explain it, but I have had that happen to me too. I will be stuck at a plateau, then eat a little more for a few days and then it drops...weird.
I believe it has something to do with your body "holding on" because it thinks you are not getting enough food. Up the food, body doesn't hold on anymore and you lose.
I hope someone has a real scientific reason0 -

You'd be shocked at the amount of food I can consume in a day and maintain my weight. It's crazy really. There's NO reason to starve yourself to lose weight! The "diet industry" has forced it down our throats for so long that people think they have to starve while "dieting". Don't diet. Change your lifestyle. You'll be shocked that you can continue enjoying some of the things you love and lose/maintain your weight. It is more about portion control.0 -
I don't know how you're eating more calories and losing weight (unless when you eat fewer calories your body stresses due to lack of calories and nutrients), but I did want to add a thought for people who didn't know that sometimes eating more really can help you to lose...
I couldn't lose my pregnancy weight fast enough to be back in military standards by the 6 month deadline. I passed my fitness test no problem, but I couldn't drop enough weight to get back into the biggest normal uniforms.
I went for advice and was told to eat more. Keep your calories the same but eat more. I was SO mad when she said this and quickly moved on to the next person and didn't have time to come back and explain it to me. I did some research and discovered that you can eat a LOT of veggies for the calories in a large drink or snack. And the bulk in the stomach triggers other mechanisms beyond being full that help your body rid itself of fat.
I lost the rest of my pregnancy weight after that and was in the best shape of my life just a year later.0 -

We're all blessed in different areas... metabolism isn't one of mine. I have finally accepted that my metabolism means I will always have to work out and eat less. I know some amazingly naturally thin people (my ex was one) who couldn't gain weight without extraordinary effort and cost (gym, protein shakes, supplements) for very, very, little return on investment. My ex got just as frustrated with his inability to gain weight as I was with my (seeming) inability to drop. Hm... you've inspired me to write a blog post. Thanks.0 -
My metabolism was in the dump also.
Now I lose weight at 2k-2500.
Eat better and reprogram!0 -

REPROGRAM - I think that is going to be the key to my weight loss. My head is still stuck in "eat less weigh less".0 -
It took a few months to figure out my sweet spot!
Now I know what to do when I need to start my veeeeerrrryyyy long bulk....0
