How do you calculate how many miles you have walked?

I want to start walking but have no idea how to calculate the distance.
Does anybody plot their progress online?

Hi Ali. There is a website called mapmyrun.com which lets you plot routes. It can also roughly calculate your calorie expenditure. I have used it for running and it is fairly accurate compared to my gps watch. Hopemthatnhelps.0

If you have a smartphone with gps, download an app like mapmyrun and it will track you as you go, record your time etc. I did it on a 5k run to test accuracy and it was spot on.0

I've been using Cardio Trainer app since I started with my weight loss and it tracks my distance. According to my history I have logged 604 miles.0

Mapmyrun might be an American site - but it does not stop you from using it....I use it here in new Zealand, and have also used it while on holiday in south africa and Asia......0 -

I use walkjogrun (http://www.walkjogrun.net/) when I can't be bothered taking my phone along with me. I find it works quite well0

You don't actually need a smartphone - you can go in on the Internet, and map the run, walk or cycle you intend doing, or have done.....and it will give you the distance.....it also allows you to set your settings in miles or kilometers depending on what you use in your neck of the woods.....0 -
I use this. No faffing around logging in and signing up and you can mark your own points on it if you're walking off road
It's a bit shabby to look at but I think it's reliable.

use endomondo really good app tells you how fast cals etc0

best for british site is endomondo mapmywalk not quite accurate0

I use runningmap.com although you have to sort of plan your route before you go - you can't tell how long you've walked whilst you are out, unless you are very sure of your walking speed. The other thing you could do is to get a pedometer!0

I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to calorie counting and exercise expenditure. So much so, that I bought a Heart Rate Monitor as it calculates your exact heart rate, you put in your own personal information i.e. weight, height, age, etc. and it will calculate the exact amount of calories you burn. You can also time yourself.
I absolutely love it & it didn't cost too much either. I definitely think it is worth it & at least you know it's accurate as it has all your own information and calculates it based on YOU and your heart rate - it's not estimated. I told you I was a bit of a perfectionist :-)0 -

Be aware though, that while it DOES measure you exact heart rate, it cannot measure the exact amount of calories. It calculates the energy likely to have been expended by activities which raise your heart rate to rate "X" and from that works out the likely calories burned using a series of formulae. While they do tend to be fairly good, you need to be aware that this method cannot ever be exact.
As an extreme example, being strapped into a scary roller coaster and not moving a muscle, will still will register a far higher calorie count, simply because your heart rate is elevated.0 -
