Someday I may want to use one and so I have a lot of questions. Many people on MFP say they are personal trainers or aspire to be. If there is a website or articles that would address my questions or if you know the answers that would be great?

What kind of certifications are required? If there are several, what are the differences is the certifications? Would someone is is primarily interested in addressing issues associated with age be looking for a different trainer than someone interested in running a marathon? Do trainers prefer different types of clients. Assuming one cannot afford a trainer as often as it would be wonderful, what is a reasonable interval between training sessions? Are there key expectations a client should have from a trainer and vice versa?

Any insight would be appreciated.

There are different certification agencies. I studied and passed my test within 2 months, but I have also taken nutrition classes before and spent many, many hours in the gym. I also interned with a trainer which was very, very helpful.

Different trainers will specialize in different areas. It also depends on the gym and what equipment they have available to them. If you are looking for a trainer just ask a ton of questions. The trainer should help you come up with goals and tell you how they will help you reach those goals.

In my opinion, it would be good to do training 2x week for a month. That will get you going, build your confidence with your lifts and training routine, and work out any "kinks" that you have (injuries, etc.).
