Diabetic Diet Question

Hi Everyone! I don't have diabetes, but had gestational diabetes with my son.....so my odds are greatly increased for the future. I have been struggling every day to keep a balanced diet and figure out "what else am I going to eat?" every day, so I decided to go back on the diabetic diet I was on during pregnancy. It is SOO helpful for me because it breaks it down into "starch, veggie, fruit, meat, milk, and fat". Each category has examples and serving sizes.
Here is my question........ I am following the 1200 calorie meal plan, however, my MFP calories say I should eat 1330. Those of you out there that follow a similiar plan.........where do I get the extra 130? And God forbid I exercise, then I am totally clueless. What combo do I eat to accomodate extra exercise??
Forgive my ignorance and please be kind. Thanks!

You can get a lot of healthy calories from nuts. I follow South Beach guidelines in an effort to prevent diabetes.0

The dietition that I see for my diabetes gave me too approaches. First, she recommdned that I eat snacks with carbs at the right level (15 to 30 carbs for a man) between meals. You obviously have to be carefl doing that, but it has worked for me. I do nuts (particularly almonds) and lots of the Weight Watcher snacks that my wife gets.
Her other suggestion was not to fell trapped by ratios of carbs to proteins to .... She suggested that I creep my proteins up a little bit for more calories that come from a place other than carbs. Just as an example, I am back to eating low fat cheese on my sandwiches.
Good luck.

I had gestational diabetes, and with my family history and weight am considered a really high risk for diabetes. I've been seeing a nutritionist and a dr clinic who specialises in weight loss, and diabetes.
Since I don't have diabetes, they have me on a slightly modified preventative type of diet. The main rules I am supposed to follow to keep my insulin levels even is to eat every 3-4 hours (max), and EVERY time I eat, I need to have either a small protein or diary. I can have diary or protein by themselves, but should not eat just carbs, or fruits and veggies by themselves. This is supposed even out the insulin levels.0
