Why does yougurt have to have so much sugar? Even the good for you greek yogurt is loaded. I found a brand I liked called cascade fresh..however, it too has a lot of sugar..it says its made from 100% juice and not table sugar.. isn't sugar sugar?

I like greek but have to add honey or agave to thin it out and take away the tart..again, defeating the purpose?

any thoughts, insight

    Get plain Greek yogurt and sweeten it yourself with fresh fruit, agave, or use some artificial sweeteners if that's up your alley.

    ETA: I reread the question - It's a double-ended sword, but it comes down to table sugar or sugar from fresh fruit/honey. Essentially, though, sugar IS sugar. Which brings me back to the artificial sweetener idea, or use stevia.

    Also, I took this as OP asking about sugar to sweeten/flavor the yogurt, not the natural dairy sugar.

    The sugar in yogurt (and any dairy) is naturally occurring sugar - otherwise known as lactose. :smile: It is different from table sugar, and it is like the sugar that occurs naturally on fruits (fructose). I eat the flavored kinds all the time!!! Oikos Key Lime is to die for!! :)
  • Have you tried Fage? Milk naturally has sugar in it. Try the Fage 0% fat yogurt with some blackberries or strawberries.

    It's from the naturally occurring sugar in the milk (lactose).

    It's a challenge. I don't eat yogurt super regularly so I don't mind the extra sugar. I say as long as it's plain and you're using natural sugar (like sweetening with a little honey or fruit) it's not the end of the world. Of course if you're diabetic it might be a different story :-)

    Try light and fit carb control, it has only 3 grams of sugar and it is delish. 45 cals.

    We have gotten so afraid to eat sugar that we've done away with eating healthy things like fruit. Processed foods, any processed foods, are not good for us to consume. If we would go back to eating foods that naturally occur in nature we would be a heck of a lot better off. Yogurt has naturally occurring sugar so don't stress it.

    I do like fage..also, I like trader joe's 0% greek yogurt.. I was just worried about the sugar I have to add to it to make it palatable..I LOVE fresh fruit but thought I should cut back because of the sugar..

    so, if I'm understanding right..naturally occuring sugar is ok artificial sugars are not?

    Is that true for sugars in milk and cottage cheese?

    I'm always over because I eat a lot of fruit and have cottage cheese everyday..LOL

    Carbmaster yogurt only has 3g sugar. Some yogurts do have added sugar, especially low fat ones or fruit ones, so read the labels.
