At Home Strength Training Suggestions for Lower Body

I want to add strength training to my routine along with the cardio I'm already doing.... but I'm hoping to do it at home and not get out in the nasty Atlanta rush hour traffic. I have some 10 pound weights to get me started on my upper body but am wondering what will work for my lower body.
The problem is I have bad knees and can't do squats and lunges without pain. I'm thinking some sort of resistance band type setup, but before I go out shopping, I thought I would get some recommendations on home equipment that would be:
1. not too expensive 2. easy on the knees 3. easy to store when not in use.

Can you do a partial lunge or squat?
I was told not to by a knee doctor a long time ago because of the wear I already have on my knees. Therein lies the problem. I'm already doing the elliptical trainer which I feel will strengthen my legs some, but I am looking to find a way to do more....0 -
Can you call your doc and get an RX for a physical therapy session? Even if you just go to one session you will get an idea of what you can do and go from there.0

Maybe one of these could help if you like following dvds:

Can you do any low impact step aerobics? Or step ups?
Deadlifts are also leg shapers (mostly back of the leg-glutes/hamstrings)
Cable leg extensions can help the front of your leg if you end up buying the resistance band.
Here's a list of tons of exercises (with photo showing how it's performed) for the legs:

You can kick up the resistence on your elliptical and go slower to help give you a little strength boost.0

Thanks everyone for the suggestions... This week is kicking my butt work-wise, but this weekend I will check out the websites mentioned and some of the exercises....0
