I have a question for you all and I am hoping to get some feedback and encouragement and maybe even some suggestions....I have been recently working out to Jillian's 30 day shred (part 1). During the jumping jacks I lose my bladder a bit....even after I go to the bathroom and empty my tank there still seems to be issues when I do the jumping jack part of the workout!! UHG - anyone else suffer from this problem or is it just me? Am I too fat or is there something wrong with my bladder? I weigh 214.8 lbs....I have never been this big before so I dont know if that is part of the problem and if so how do you get around that because it is very discouraging!!

It's a combination of many things. Age, having kids, weight and genetics. Last year I was having the same problem and it finally got to the point that I could not jump or sneeze without peeing a little. I ended up having surgery for it and it's been a God send! But, kegels will help a lot. Keep up the good work!
  • I have been doing kegal exercises off and on since my youngest (3yrs old) was born - it doesnt seem to help! What kind of surgery??

Start with a good exam with your MD. Then lots of Kegel's - everyday! Surgery is always a option but way down the list. Ah, the joys of womanhood!

Maybe I am not doing the kegels correctly - weird question but how are they done exactly so that I know I am doing them right. Thanks!!

best way to learn kegels is to do them while going to the bathroom. Allow your urine to come to full stream, and cut it off with a strong muscle contraction. Work up to 100 of these per day (eventually you'll know how to do them without urinating)
Also use them when being intimate with your spouse (you're burning cals anyway, you might as well use ALL your muscles!)
  • I am really glad someone had posted about this because a similar thing happens to me and it worries me
  • hey girl join the club. The reason that you have troubles even after you go to the bathroom is because your bladder does not empty completely. its tilted. Yes begin over weight does contribute to the problem but only when it come to weak muscles. its not because we are fat. Its because we had kids.

doing keegals might help but if you find that its getting worse with age its time for a bladder pick up. I know because I need one my self.
Now this will sound gross but before you do your work outs use a tampon. it really works . it puts the bladder back where is should be while exercising.

Leaking urine when you don't want to is called urinary incontinence. There are a bunch of different types and reasons for urinary incontinence, but what you describe sounds like stress urinary incontinence:
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001893/

There's lots of things that can go on in that area. I disagree with the poster who said your bladder is tilted--that sounds like bladder prolapse, which is different from stress incontinence (it can cause different types of urinary incontinence). The only way to tell if your bladder is prolapsed is by a physical exam (vaginal exam). Stress incontinence can happen with bladder prolapse or without, so you can have them both at the same time, but having one doesn't necessarily mean you have the other. ETA: I mean, I can't tell that you whether or not you have it over the internet. Urinary leakage isn't a very specific sign of it.

Stress incontinence and bladder prolapse are non-life threatening and not a sign of impending doom, so if you think you have them, don't worry. See your doctor if it bothers your everyday life and you want it treated. It's possible your doctor could refer you to a physical therapist who can go over Kegel exercises with you.

Also, I leak a little urine when i do jumping-jacks too. It puts a lot of pressure on your bladder!
