I too have what's labelled "exercise or exertion" induced asthma. Figured it was a cop out and didn't believe it till my body could run way longer then my lungs would allow. Got a basic inhaler from the doc to try and it makes a huge difference. Makes it so the airways don't get inflamed and swell closed, and I only use it just when I am going to run or workout hard... And as to weights, from what I understand, do low weights and high reps and keep ur cardio cranked in between sets...

I've had asthma forever and I run. I use an inhaler before running or any strenuous exercise.

Have you discussed some sort of treatment for the asthma with a doctor?

a good idea is strength training 3x a week and cardio 4-5x a week. :) Muscle doesn't bulk you up, it makes you smaller.

I too have asthma and I use my inhaler prior to all my workouts. I try to take more frequent water breaks because that helps calm me down. If you are really worried, try swimming. There is something about the breathing patterns with swimming that is easier to control/manage your asthma. The best thing to do is pace yourself and if you want to run, work on jogging first to help build up your endurance.

I am an asthmatic runner. It has taken me a long time to be able to breathe correctly and relax during my runs. It can be irritating when I get sick afterwards I end up with rebound problems and my workouts suffer. I know my limits, I carry an inhaler. I will never be a fast runner, but endurance running is different once you get the hang of it. Try building up to running by doing elliptical trainer. You should be able to speak during the workout or you are working too hard.

Agreed! How is your asthma managed? You won't bulk up lifting weights, it is extraordinarily difficult to put on muscle as a male and even harder as a female.
  • I have had chronic Asthma all my life, and I never thought I would be able to do any kind of physical activity. I always take my inhalor before a workout so that I open up my airways before they can become constricted. I also take a steroid inhalant twice a day to help with the inflamation. I can do about thirty minutes of Zumba or Kickboxing, but after that it is almost impossible for me to continue. The good news is that when I first started I couldn't get thru 5 mins of cardio. I am hoping to be able to build up my breathing and techniques to be able to do an hour a day of cardio. My dream is to one day be able to run outside. My doctor said it takes patience, but with enough training at a slow pace, I can achieve that. He also said the more hydrated I stay the better it is for my breathing. I think any kind of daily improvments that you can make, you should be proud of.
