What's the best way to do this?

    I've never used it, but have heard a lot of good things about Acronis True Image.

    Are you wanting to back up everything, or just select data files?

    Kinda, everything that I put on it (above and beyond the operating system and software). Documents, Cakewalk sessions, audio, pictures etc etc etc.

    External drive. Save EVERYTHING to it. Windows craps out, use the recovery utility Computer is back to normal and everything you need is on the extra drive.

    Following data loss last year (hard drive died), I got a Buffalo network drive - it automatically creates a mirror image on the drive, I don't have to remember to do anything.
