I have a Fitbit and you're right in that it's basically a fancy pedometer device. Their newest version is a little more complex and is better at tracking movements such as climbing stairs, etc. Overall, it seems to be relatively accurate and it provides some interesting input if you've ever wondered what your base level of activity is.
What it won't do is provide calories burned for exercises that are primarily upper body and it's not great for tracking how many calories you burned during a sport like hockey. Still, it's useful in providing a glimpse into your overall activity level.0
