Starting High Aiming for Low

Looking to start a place where people like me (needing more than 100lbs of weight to loose) can get some much needed advice and motivational comments.

I realize the time its going to take to loose the weight and the commitment necessary needs to be realistic. But where should i start. The gym is daunting. I work in front of a computer all day long and am a single mother of a almost 3 year old and looking to move in the next few weeks. Alot going on but I realized in the last few months that something needs to change with my weight.

Will post more later on! :-)

Thank you for any suggestions and words of encouragement!

so a friend talked me into the Jillian Michael's 30 day shred....and day one...ok so i don't have the room for jumping jacks in my lil bed room where I'm at so those will have to commence once I move...but damn...modified a lil bit of it...but lets see how the first week goes...i feel ok right now..tomorrow might be a lil different lol
  • I did the 30 day shred and it worked quite well however after a while it got repetitive doing the same 3 routines. Good luck!

I never needed to lose 100+, however, I've lost over half the weight I need to reach my goal weight. Firstly, let me say "welcome!" You have taken the first step to changing your life.

    Secondly, please read this: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/470367-tips-for-newbies

I wrote this specifically for newbies who are getting confused with all the information and sometimes misinformation thrown at them at once.

Lastly, start doing what you can for workouts and eating well. Don't sweat it if you go over your calories frequently at first. When you first start out, the eating is the hardest part.

All you need to do is eat below your calorie limit on a daily basis. Eat your workout calories back (see above link for why), and just keep going

Its really hard not to beat your self up when you try to do a push up and because I'm so short and have short arms...they are virtually pointless. lmao

At least I can laugh at myself and i think thats the key part. At least I have a starting point for comparison so i will be able to tell if this is working or not :-)

Don't sweat it! I still can't do full pushups!

Do your best and do not give up.

I have a mild form of Muscular Dystrophy, which affects my balance, so high impact aerobics, running, etc. is impossible for me. I need to lose 60-70 lbs. Some coworkers and I started an exercise group. We've been using Leslie Sansone's Walk Thin from her Walk at Home series. There are different increments...2 mile, 3 mile, 4 big miles, and 5 big miles. The last 2 dvd's come with a resistance band (I'm not sure about the first ones) and cost $9.97 at WalMart. (I'm not plugging any particular store, just telling you where I got mine). At first, my balance during exercise wasn't so good, and I had to hang on to something. I've noticed a huge improvement in my balance now, and I can get through my 4 miles with a minimum of assistance. At work tonight, one of my coworkers said that I'm looking slimmer, and I've only been doing the exercises for about 3 weeks. We've also been eating a lot of salads. Getting into a routine has always been difficult for me in the past, but with family, coworkers, and MFP as my support team, I feel confident that I'm on my way to being a healthier, slimmer, me. Add Leslie Sansone to your fitness repetoire...you'll be glad you did!

Thanks for the suggestion! I like to walk so defiantly worth a try! Its really hard to work a workout into a busy schedule, but I'll learn. Keep up the awesome work! Its great that you can actually notice the difference. I think that's got to be a key to the whole weight loss thing. We have to see results to actually know its working. :-)
  • Good luck.

Hi! i've gone from 231 to 185, on my own. now i'm looking to get to 140, not quite 100 pounds total but i wanted to encourage you. exercise is great, but what you eat will largely determine what you lose. i have had major surgery on my left shoulder, elbow & wrist and they will never work to full capacity. i cannot do full pushups, but there are tons of other things i can do. it was months before i has the muscle tone to do crunches, and guess what? i did 150 last night. i rarely go to the gym, i don't run marathons, but i do work hard, in my livingroom after the kids go to bed. i take them for walks, as slow as i am walking with my 3 year old, i am still lapping everybody that is sitting on the couch. i have had a complete 180 turn around in lifestyle and i can see the end in sight. good luck to you, i hope you get where you are going!

PBPrincess - Thank you that was really encouraging to see someone in my similar situation mother wise being able to achieve their goal. :-) And Grats to you for having the determination to push through the surgery and still loose the weight.

Figured I would give this another try....Since I'm gonna have alot of time off due to unemployment....might as well take the time to work on me for a while. So heads up all....I'm back to see if if i can dump some of this weight and be able to look down and see only boobs instead of tummy! It would be heaven! :-)

    Hello all,

I am on my 2nd week logging food and am in need of friends and support! I don't have 100lbs to lose but 30lbs, but my thoughts are no matter the goal the more support the merrier. I am trying to lose weight by focusing on eating whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible.

I have a food blog about it at www.realfoodquest.com to take pictures so I can literally see what it is I am putting in my stomach on a daily basis. So far the blog plus this site have helped.

One suggestion I would have is find your BMR which is how many calories you burn when your body is at rest. As long as you are consuming net calories below that number on average you will be losing weight (i prefer the mobile application for this site to see the weekly net average) regardless of how slow.

As a yo-yo dieter I am sick of losing quickly only to gain it back. I am in this one for the long haul! Friend me if you are with me!

I have 5 kids, so I totally understand how difficult it is to fit in a workout. Here are some things that worked for me...hope they help:
    1. Get a Wii and Just Dance with your kids
    2. Walking and pushing a stroller: cardio and weights all in one!
    3. Ride a bike with a child seat on the back.
    4. Ask the mom of one of your daughter's friends to work out with you. The girls can play while you try a workout video or program.

The best part of including your daughter in whatever you do is that she will learn from you about creating a healthy lifestyle. Good luck, with a little creativity I know you will come up with something that works for you!
