Hey guys,
I'm one of those people who struggle to get enough protein into their diets and I thinking about starting to take protein shakes to combat this. Would anyone recommend this and would it be beneficial to do so?
Thanks

I have the same problem because I am a vegetarian. I love eggs and yogurt though and try to get my protein through these means. I have heard that protein shakes are good for you if you make them correctly. Stay away from high fat/calorie/sugar ones and use water instead of milk. Add berries for more flavor also ups the nutritional value and makes it sweeter naturally. Good luck!0

Optimum Nutrition makes good protein powders and yes it would be beneficial as you would be preserving and building some muscle to help you keep the weight off.0 -
If you are struggling to get the protein in, then yes. I dont have any problem getting my protein so I no longer take them but they are quick and convenient.
Aim to get the low carb sugar free protein shakes. Do not go for the mass gainer ones as they are loaded in calories. A normal protein shake has around 150 calories a serve so just keep that in mind.
They taste fantastic though. With or without milk. Go for chocolate or vanilla flavours. They are generally the best tasting. Dont let the people in the supplement stores con you into getting a female-centric protein supplement. They are not as good or as effective as the ones recommended to males. The female ones supposedly have "added fat burning properties" etc. They are generally just an inferior product at a higher price.0 -
A decent tub of whey protein isn't cheap......but it works out per meal as a lot less than buying chicken or beef.
I'd echo the vanilla flavour advice but I've never found one that tastes great. For me the range goes from Nasty-Tollerable. Mixed with milk is nicer than water.
There are a huge amount of brands on the market, but I learnt from a 'manufacturer' years ago that there are actually only about 4 real manufacturers in the world and everyone buys from them and rebrands (not unlike TV's) maybe adding their own flavours. You can see this by comparing the nutrition labels of different brands. You often find very different prices for the same product in different packaging.
The Holland and Barratt stuff is decent value when on sale for a 1kg tub. If you find you are going to carry on then you can buy 5kg and 10kg online which is good value long term.0
