Making up for going over cals

Yesterday I went over my cals by about 250. What do you do when you go over? Burn extra calories with exercise the next day? Eat less the next day? Continue like nothing happened?

continue on your normal routine. one day of going over your calories is not going to affect your weight loss/maintenance (unless you go over by 3,500 calories which = 1 lb) as it's only one day and not the overall trend of over a week/month, etc.

You were over yesterday, but under the two days before, so I wouldn't sweat it, it'll all average out in the end.

You can either just go back to your normal routine, or you can 'zig-zag' your calories by going a bit under today to make up for it. Different people use different strategies. Sometimes when I know there's a day coming up that I'm going to go over (holiday, birthday celebration, date night, etc) I will go just a little under for a few days leading up to that day, then when the day comes I'll go ahead and eat what I want and not stress over it. It tends to balance out and then I go back to normal after the 'over' day.

I usually let it go, or try to workout a little extra the next day or two just to put my mind at ease.
  • Thanks everyone :)
