I have been struggling a lot with binge eating.

I was wondering what tips others used after a day of horrible added calories.

Thanks : )

At the moment, I delving in the 'throw it all up' philosophy but I've got a terrible bout of the flu and have no choice. :-(
  • I drink water and go for a walk. Shake it off and start new the next day.

Don't beat yourself up about it. Move on.

Some people plan a monthly or weekly "spike day" and look forward to it.

After I've eaten and indulged too much I just make sure that the next day and days after I get plenty of water in and continue with my workout routine... Over eating is going to happen sometimes.. It's life... So you just have to push through it...

I definitely wouldnt advise you to purge or anything extreme like that. Ive had issues with binge eating in the past and what worked for me was trying to figure out what caused the binge in the first place. Whether it be a bout of depression, stress, family, etc. Its important to figure out what your triggers are and then work towards putting together a strategy to make sure you dont get yourself into that situation again. For example, if you are really stressed out and want to start binge eating, maybe go for a walk instead or try writing down your feelings to see what is making you want to binge eat. Call a friend and talk to your friend or even family member about what is going on.

The day after a binge, you can do the same thing. Talk to someone you trust or create an plan on action. Drink plenty of water the next day and just resume your regular activity. Maybe go a tad bit lighter on the calories to compensate for the previous days binge. And most importantly, dont be hard on yourself. You are a work in progress and you have to give yourself credit for even acknowledging that you have an issue with binge eating. Its something that WILL come up again in your weight loss journey and its also something that you will have to take steps to avoid and know most importantly what your triggers are.

Feel free to check out my profile and add me as a friend for support and motivation.

Take care of yourself and know that you are not alone.

  • Thank you! I have really been struggling with it.

I go too strict for a week or so and over do it almost

two a day sessions at the gym and cutting calories very very low,
then when trying to get more stable and normal i have trouble stopping.

I am also starting a new job and this is my last week with the company I have been with for 2 years. Just a lot of changes going on and it wears on my self esteem. I am sometimes scared because I lost 80 pounds that when I have days like yesterday that I will go instantly back to the old me.

My problem right here too! Well as far as the too strict on what I do and don't consume. Part of it I think is we aren't giving our bodies enough of what they need or in my case my sweet tooth enough of what it wants! I need to start working in a cookie or piece of candy, etc once a week....

Today I'm starting a new day. I took a digestive enzyme to kind of help absorb a little bit and get rid of the bloat but otherwise not much else I can do....

THE OVERLY strict mentality is what causes binge eating for most people. Abandon that thought. You shouldn't have to deprive yourself to such extremes to get the body you want. I wish you the best of luck in finding balance.

ok my reply looks like I quoted myself.....whoops
  • I used to be a binger myself and then feel horrible the next day and probably for a good couple of days after so......

i set myself a spike day once a week normally a sunday

i eat back all my exercise calories throughout the week so im still able to have my lil treats during the week so when it does come to my "spike day" i dont seem to binge ..i eat a fair bit bt like bt dont seem to gorge myself to the point of feeling sick and on my spike day i make sure i drink plenty of water too so i dont mistake wanting food for being thirsty

I would say those unhealthy things, let them in once in awhile so you dont feel the urge to binge maybe?? Also, too if one day you over eat on something very healthy let it go, tomorrow is a new day!

I like that, Spike Day! So much better sounding than "Cheat day" or "splurge day".

Can u treat yourself with something other than good when you are feeling it? Next day, get up go to gym, spin, burn off like a solid hour of sweaty cardio. Make those extra calories work for you.

You could also be unbalanced in vitamins and minerals and your body is going to crabe things till the deficiencies are gone. You could also try supplement 5htp but I would look into making sure u have enough nutrients.

A little binging can actually help your metabolism recharge and break a plateau. As long as it is not a recurring theme. If I binge it is usually another glass of wine or 2. Your situation sounds like comfort eating maybe because of the job change approaching?

I would like to first say that I understand where you are and I have done both the unhealthy side which is purge and then I figured out what was mentally going on.

One if I was eating over calories it was becasue I felt that I couldn't You must decide on the spike day vs cheat meal options that are presented on this site. What I have opted to do is to place items in my daily diet that allow me to feel that I have things I want more often than not. For instance I like sweets so evert day I have two table spoons of Semi sweet Chocolate chips at 70 cals each.

Second admit to yourself what you are doing and see how you can change the habit. I would lose 2 pounds get excited and eat a cheat meal that day and be down in the dumps becasue my numbers where back up. Stupid but I had to find non food rewards.

I also really got excited about working out and the ratio of my personal loss when I workout at a certain rate. So that helped me and I am a single mom with three boys and a full time job so dont let it fool you its rough....

Finally I dont know all the answers and I have good days and bad and so will you what you need to know is that if you have a support team and people who really care the best advise is that you are a wonderful person, you can do this, your results are going to vary daily, weekly and monthly and some days you will want to give up and some days you can lift up the person that wants to give up. Keep going you can do this and if you ever need me I am right here to tell you that I have made a host of mistakes and hopefully enough right decisions to be on a better track....

Hey we are on MFP right? So we got this!!!

Now go get it and good luck on each and every goal......
