I am a 26 year-old male, 6' 1" and weigh 276lbs. I started out 2 weeks and 1 day ago at 293lbs, but I'm not sure if I'm dieting healthy. I want to loose 100lbs total by the first week of July. I'm on average eating 1100-1200 calories a day (all 3 meals and a snack included) and less than 20g of fat. I drink nothing but water and several glasses/bottles of it daily. I workout 5 days a week and I have started jogging as of this week along with walking and strength training.

I am wondering if I am doing this healthy and if maybe you think I can reach my target weight of 190 by July?

Why are you limiting your fat so much?

losing 100 lbs in 6 mos is damn fast. It's not likely.

    Slow down.
  • Have you consulted a doctor? That should be your first step considering the amount of weight you are trying to lose. They can make sure you do it safely.
  • With what I eat, its never more than 20g of fat. I eat semi-generous amounts, but its all usually low calorie and low fat foods.

    Agreed.

It's definitely possible. But I would bring in some professional help just to make sure you're doing it safely.

Good luck on your journey! You can do it

I think for your current weight your daily calories might be too low, especially if you're exercising daily. Your body might hold onto the weight thinking it's being starved.... It might take a bit of trial and error to find just the right balace of calories and micronutrients. But once you find what works for you, you'll do great. If your diet is too rigid or restrictive you might find it frustrating in time and find it hard to stick to long term.

    Good luck!!

I personally wouldn't recommend either starting without the supervision of a doctor, nor eating a very low-fat diet. Your body needs fat, it doesn't make you fat.

definitely consult your dr. with how much you are exercising you should probably be eating more calories. and higher protein foods as well. And definitely slow down the weight loss goal. It's not healthy to lose that much that fast. Usually if it's a slow weight loss, it'll stay off and you'll know how to manage after you hit your final goal. Good luck!

I don't think 1200 cals is sustainable for someone your height and weight. It didn't work for me, and I'm a 5'9" 190 lb female. I increased my cals to 1400 and it made a huge difference, and I am losing weight much faster.

I agree-- not enough calories unless you're under the supervision of a doctor and preferably a nutritionist. It's really hard to get the nutrients you need on so little. 100 lbs in 6 months means 4 lbs per week, which is double the "recommended" amount. It might be doable but it'd probably be healthier to go slower.
  • I do have a doctor appointment next week, so I can get a little more info on how to loose this weight healthier and some calculators suggest my healthy weight at 220, while others say 170? Its weird, but I just want to feel and look good. Thank you all and I will update you when I get the info.

Why would you want such a low daily calorie target? I'm pretty sure MFP wouldn't set your target that low, or even close to it. Men can eat more than that and still lose weight. Also why such a short timeline?

Lots of good advice. I would like to add that I have been much more successful limiting sugar and other simple carbs (refined flour, potatoes, starchy veggies, etc) rather than fat. I do avoid processed fats.
