Do squats/lunges etc make your legs and behind 'bigger'?

Was just curious to know, as my aim is to make my butt SMALLER rather than bigger lol, a lot of people have advised against me squatting and doing lunges as apparently it'll bulk my bottom half more (I am an hourglass, so more emphasis is on my thighs and such, so aiming to thin them down), however others have said it really helps to tone them...I obviously keep to my deficit, however, so surely there is no way of a major bulk up? I also do a lot of cardio, not just pure weights too! And thus far haven't noticed any weight gain in that area, can anyone share their experiences with lower body workouts etc? Thank you! :)

If you see any "swell" after squats/lunges it's typically temporary because your muscles are hold water after a workout. It will usually dissipate. Besides that, you're not going to bulk up in a certain body part because you work it with strength training.

You can't fix genetics, but squats and lunges will firm up your butt. Fat loss is the only thing to make it smaller. However, fat loss without exercise will leave it flabby.

Keep in mind, your legs and glutes are the largest muscles in your body and the more muscle you have, the more resting calories you burn. Do squats and lunges and you'll see some results.

and who wants a saggy, flabby butt? It's better to be slightly bigger, but toned (for want of a better word here) than smaller and saggier.

squats etc will firm ur butt up.... if ur like me and when u lose weight the butt disapppears (well flattens) swats will help it look like a butt and not like a flattened pillow :)
  • Ok fantastic, so provided I keep my deficit, do cardio and generally promote fat loss I am 'safe' from a potentially bigger butt? :P

Yeah I want to keep the muscle there but there is like...fat covering it...like a marshmellow :P So I assume my muscle will just get tighter, and I have to lose body fat to see definition. Thanks guys!

I love squats and lunges, and although I like the size of my butt, I have noticed that doing these has slimmed my thighs and lifted my butt. I wouldn't avoid them, but maybe incorporate them with other behind slimming moves.
