OK, this is NOT to single out Joe's. But I just got awesome news... my twins have been accepted into the gifted program at school. So, we decided that we will take them to Joe's, as it is their favorite place to eat. The last time we went there was before I changed my eating habits. So, I downloaded their nutritional values for some of the things we have eaten there.... YIKES!!!!!

Surf & Turf Burger 1260 calories 85g of fat
Crab Nachos 2000.... yes, 2000 calories with 145 grams of fat!
Diablo Mussels 1060 calories and 54 grams of fat
Homestyle Chicken Tenders 1450 calories and 81 grams of fat
Blackened Chicken Club 850 / 53
Fish and Chips 1430 calories... 92 grams of fat

OK, so these are things we have eaten there in the past. Certainly there are better choices, but there are also worse choices.... we may have to reconsider our dining choice for tonight. Or I will come home and work out for 2 hours.... not sure which.

Do you know what you're eating at restaurants?

Wow! Thanks for pointing that out. Can not believe there is that many calories and fat grams in the food. I am just learning about my food, and I am continually amazed to find out how terrible I was eating.

I bet their sodium is way high too... even on the low cal stuff. I say go and try to enjoy yourself. Don't deprive the kids, but let them know that this is not something they should not eat often. While you learn to eat better they should too....

Steamed crab legs are one of the most diet friendly foods out there. If you skip the butter :)

I always know when we're going out to eat, therefore I always look up nutritional information before ordering. It's become habit now. You can still have the things you like, just in moderation. Why not order a meal and ask for a to go box. Place half of it inside to take home for another day. Still yummy, just less!

If I go out somewhere I tried to get a grilled chicken sandwich and only eat the chicken...not the bun. They may have a lighter options way of cooking, ie no butter, etc. Also, try to get a GOOD workout in before you go!
  • We don't have a Joe's around here (Thank God, because I would eat there daily. lol Ok, not really!) but when we are out of town, and want to splurge I get the Boston Steampot (If they still have it) no sausage, extra corn (but my hubby usually eats the extra corn)... so that could be an option like someone else suggested. And, yeah, LOTS of water to flush some of that sodium. haha

Get the King Crab Feast without the butter. It's 570 calories in all.

Try to find info on PF Chang's, Cheesecake Factory, or Maggiano's, pretty sure they just pour lard on everything!

Looks like the solution is one of the crabpots. Far as I can tell, when you take the melted butter and sausage out of a steampot, it also becomes relatively healthy. Thanks for the info!
    Yep.

Last time I ate at Joe's, I had grilled Mahi Mahi, rice and salad. The portions were huge, so I ate the salad and about half the fish and rice, and took the rest home. You don't have to eat everything on your plate, and you get two meals for the price of one. You also can speak up for yourself when you order. Request salad dressing on the side or substitute vegetables or salad for fries, etc.

As for sodium, just about every restaurant uses way too much. So I don't eat out every day. And when I do eat out, I drink lots of water.

I agree. If Joe's is what your kids love, then go to Joe's and just do the best you can. Let them have their special celebration! And your kids rock ... that is great news!

If I know ahead of time where we are going then I look it up online before we get there so I can make better choices. If not and I know early in the day then I plan my workouts and lunch knowing I might have a BIG night.

Restaurant salads tend to be as high in calories as any other dish.

Why not plan ahead, and fit it into your nutrition goals for the day? Why not have a "free" day once in a while?

Joes doesn't advertise it, but they'll fix you up something special. I always order the caesar salad with grilled and blackened mahi mahi on the top. Dressing on the side.

It's not on the menu, but if you ask really nicely, they'll make it for you.

Yes, I know and I'm careful. I have gotten to where I really don't like to go to restaurants without nutrition info.
Who wants to guess what/how much they're eating?
But even at strange places, almost everywhere that isn't fast food (and some places that are) you can get a bed of salad of some sort topped with a grilled chicken/steak/fish of some sort. If you do like I do and pack your Walden's calorie free dressing and bring it with you, you are looking at a pretty low carb/high protein meal as long as you watch your portions.

They just opened one of those here and I looked it up prior to a visit. Needless to say, I cancelled my visit.

Wow that's crazy. Maybe I should stay away from that restaurant. We have one here locally but I've never been there. I was at Applebees last night and before I went I checked out their menu ( I always do that before dining out!). I noticed that they have 5 or 6 meals under 550 calories so I thought, ok no problem and I decided on the Asian shrimp with broccoli. Sounds healthy right? After I got there I decided to look up the nutritional info on MFP and I saw that it had over 3,000 (No typo!) mgs of sodium in it. 470 calories, yeah I guess that's good but with the sodium I had to pass on it. I ended up with the chili lime chicken but it still had about 1900 mg of sodium in it!
You make a very good point about the calories but we have to watch the sodium too. Good luck with your choice. I know you'll do fine because you cared enough to post it on here. And also, who wants to go out for dinner then come home and work it off for 2 hrs? Not me. I'd rather eat something that will nourish my body, not punish it!
    Also, congrats to the kids!
