You Really Should Eat Your Exercise Cals Back!

If i ate all my exercise calories back every day, I'd probably explode. I work out about 30-45 minutes (fitting it in throughout the day). I already get 1400 calories per day, and if I were to add in another 300-500, I'd be too full. So I usually leave about 300 or more calories on the table, but I am losing and am not worried about it. I rarely go under 1200 total per day so I'm not worried about it.
I personally don't feel that people should have to eat all them back, but if they want to they can. As long as you get a protien/complex carb in after your workout, you are good.

No exploding necessary if you spread it out in snacks so that you don't have to eat huge meals. :-)0 -
I agree with... both sides.
I have spent decades watching friends do every fad diet w/o me, because I knew I would NOT stay w/a drastic plan for long, and I didn't want to yo-yo.
But even though I was able to put the brakes on gaining, doing it MY way (small, gradual, painless changes) it wasn't enough to get the car turned back in the other direction -- to actual significant weight loss.
So I am ready for a jump start. I intend to get a little drastic for a little while, because the "yes, it can be done" encouragement is what I need most at the moment.

I feel like that is all theoretical... and hugely estimated. I am 5'10 248-9lbs. I also have my cals @1370 per mfp. I have sedentary set as well but still attempt to work out 3x a week for 30-60 mins. Mine is set to loose 2lbs per week. And I am lucky if in reality that I drop one. For the past 2 weeks I have gone up and down the same 1-2lbs. I net between 870-1370 avg a day. I have gone over on some days. I have been under on some. Sometimes I eat the exercise cals... sometimes I don't.
It IS different for everyone. I so wish it were black and white... but it isn't.
True, there is not likely a hard-fast rule for everybody; these threads get silly. My nutritionist who has a very solid education background in nutrition and is a pro-BB does not have me eating back exercise calories. When him and I started working together I was 12% BF at 217lbs. In five-weeks I'm down to 209lbs and 10% BF and I hit personal 1RM records on the Bench Press and Deadlift. Losing fat and improving strength on a calorie deficit is pretty sweet. On non-workout days I eat the same amount of calories as I do on workout days just different macro-nutrient levels. I don't even know how much I burn to be honest, doesn't matter.
Regarding the exercise time issue.... Exercise for as long as you want or for whatever helps you hit your goals. If you can only get in 30minutes a couple times a week or you push for 90-minutes five-times a week, it doesn't matter just do something.0 -

I don't eat back all my exercise calories. First off, it's just too much food and second, if I did, I would only lose 1 pound a week and I want to lose 2 per week. I exercise 5 days a week with one easy exercise day (300 cal burn) and one off day. (Friday off Whoohoo!!) During those 5 days I burn anywhere from 900-1200+ calories depending on what I'm doing. Yes, I work my *kitten* off. When I get home in the evening I'm hungry but there is no way I can eat back all those calories! I would be stuffed beyond reason! LOL I usually have about 400-500 left over which is good for me. I have been consistently losing 2 pounds a week since I started. On my off day I splurg a little but wont go over 1700 calories which is what I would need to maintain my goal weight.0

When I first met my wife she was a single-mother working two jobs and she still found 30-45 minutes for her favorite exercise videos. No excuses.

Honestly speaking.. whether a person eats those exercise calories back or not is always going to be a heated debate with some people.
I wont go around telling people what they should or shouldnt do simply because there are those among the weight-loss population who have to consult what is right for their individual situations with the physicians/specialists/registered dieticians they are currently seeing.
Before someone slams me for that previous comment, yes - I have an Endo who has the nutritional-related background to work with people who have metabolic issues - mine however has no name to it and therefore Im the medical guinea pig for treatment, dietary intake and exercise.
I just think people should talk with the professional medical and clinical folks that are overseeing their care. It makes more sense that way because they have access to the individual's medical health history, medications, conditions, etc.0 -
I wouldn't be able to survive if I didn't eat my calories back, in fact I excercise just so I CAN eat. I am working my way to exercising for 60 min 5 days a week (made it to four this week) so I can have my burgers, pizza or just eat out or have some great snacks.Without being able to eat back the cals I lose, I woud feel deprived, and less apt to stay with this0

Different ways for different people. We are all finding a way to get the job done. However Its not healthy for any woman to eat less than 1200 calories a day. Thats what our bodies need to function..our organs, our brains...if we are lethargic or dead whats the point of being thin
What do you mean by eating the excerise calories? Thats what creates the deficit at the end of the day to lose weight, if you have had enough to eat, why eat them back? Now I say this assuming its a normal 400-600 cal burn workout and youve eaten at least 1200 cal total at the end of the day...0 -

the deficit is already included in the allowance MFP gives you, by not eating back exercise calories you are creating double your intended deficit which is not healthy.
if you eat 1200 and burn 400-600, your net is 600-800 which is nowhere near enough for your basic bodily functions to keep you alive!0 -

I work out for an hour twice a week is all. I keep myself on a 2000 calorie diet and I personally find that by not eating back my calories, I end up losing weight. I might be different than a lot of other people though because I only maintain about a 500 kcal deficit as opposed to some who opt for a larger deficit.0

Not necessary for most people, but some truly enjoy it, or are trainers, or are working toward certain goals which may require more time and effort. :-)0 -
i had major issues with not being able able to lose weight because i wasn't eating enough calories or exercising,im struggling to make it to 1200 let alone wat im burning but ive sill lost 1st since new yrs ,wat i dont understand is isnt the deficit wat causes weight if you eat all you burn wouldnt you just be maintaining?
That's what I don't get, and I have read all the arguments about eating your exercise calories. IF I need to lose weight and I have 1200 limit - which I must admit I sometimes find hard to get to, now that I am not having added sugar / butter etc - have been choosing healthy fresh foods as much as possible - I "get" that. Limit my intake - tick!
BUT if I then exercise, which I need to do more off, tthat is my downfall I'm a lazy so-and-so - IF I burn calories - it seems strange that I should "eat" them back?? Perhaps because I do so little exercise for me it's not an issue - for those people who manage 60-90 mins nearly every day :flowerforyou: then I can see it would be an issue. But for slugs like me it probably isn't?
ALTHOUGH I am stuck at the same weight for a week - maybe I SHOULD eat back those few cals I burn!!!! Mmm no "smiley" for confused :laugh:0 -

if you know you are going to exercise that day, plan your day out in advance then you can spread them through the day and not be stuck with 1000 extra cals to eat last thing at night0 -

I peekd at your diary, and I think you are fine. You ate about 1900 calories of healthy choices today. Don't sweat it...if you are full, you are full! Next time, just try to get in a mid-morning and evening snack. Not eating all of your calories every single time is not going to kill your hard work0 -
