We love our Fish and Chips here in the UK and Friday traditionally is the day to eat them. So we normally indulge at lunchtime in my place of work.
I have planned to miss breakfast and indulge with the Fish & Chips at lunchtime, is this wise?

I don't see any problem with it at all. If you stay below your daily calorie goals, you'll still lose weight. Fish is also pretty great... although fried fish is possibly less great. Regardless, it sounds fabulously yummy.

it's up to you but i would advise you to never miss breakfast. it will make you very hungry for lunch and might as well be uncontrolled of your portions later throughout the day. maybe have some soup or salad before the fish n chips so that you'll feel full sooner, enjoy!0

the saying on here goes don;t deprive yourself of anything and ti reduce your portions, so think what i would do if it were me is to either, eat normal breakfast and have half of what the old you would of done, so half a piece of fish and half the size of chippys.
The other plan of course is to have a cheat day which again is recommended on here.. i am on sat as its my dads 60th and we are having a chinese meal! :bigsmile: Boy am i looking forward to that!! so using that day as a cheat day as you can;t undo all your hard work in one session.

This. If you are worried about the total calories then just eat half of the total portion instead of all of it.0 -
I would say instead of skipping breakfast, try eating healthier for breakfast and dinner, that way you're only indulging on one meal and you can still maintain your calorie goal.0

I would have breakfast. How about getting a dingle fish rather than with chips ( whenever I order this it always comes with a few chips anyway!) or splitting a portion of chips with someone else (ours is always a massive portion and I can never finish it all). If not I would just enjoy it!0

I'm a Yank, and I love my fish and chips!!! Of course, mine are usually along the lines of baked now, but when I was in the UK, I lived on it every Friday!!
You should at least have a small protein/fibre (yes, I know Queen's English) breakfast, but just moderate. If you have to, take an extra jog or walk. (chase the girlies!!! that is always fun!) Don't deprive yourself...enjoy!0 -
safe? Yes but wise? no =( This is my huegest problem, I skip meals and when you skip your body gos into hold onto fat mode. It's not sure when it will get feed again. Like others have said either have a cheat day or try a smaller portion. If you really want to you can always get more. You may surprise yourself and be satisfyed with less. Take a walk after lunch? The fact that your thinking about it is great! To many times we eat without thinking. Hang in there your going to do great!0

As much as i hate to use The Mirror as a source...
A large portion of battered cod and chips contains a massive 1,385 calories and 77g of fat, whereas a small portion contains 685 calories and 38g of fat.

Mmmmm, I live near an award-winning fish-n-chip shop in Belfast - I allow myself a treat about once a month, and I usually just go for the fish, or else I split a fish supper with my husband. I wouldn't skip breakfast, though.0

when it's my cheat day I have fat free yoghurt for brekky, asda fat free blue berry is 51 cals for 100g so eat two portions of that ....then knock yourself out on the fish and chips class it as your cheat day and make up for it by going for at least a 30 min walk every day to even things out ...worked for me :0)0

you could always go for one of those Oats So Simple porridge servings and still get a pretty filling breakfast for just 213 cals when made with whole milk0

we have them every friday, but my Husband makes them... he is a genius with a deep fat fryer... it's an indulgence but only once a week and I'm still losing weight! (and I have breakfast too...)0

Wow thanks dudes for the advice, I'm gonna have an apple for my 10 oclock break and then use up my cheat day, then take on the missus at badminton on Saturday to use up the calories.0

Give it a go see how you get on. What I would do though is drink a load of water after to flush out the salt (If you're anything like me you will salt up your fish n chips).
I used to have Fish n chips quite regularly but it's a rarity now and I find two things: 1. I don't enjoy it as much as I did, the batter and oil give me indigestion. 2. It's a bit of a trigger food for me and if I indulge I often find myself eating cr@p for the rest of the day.
I've heard of some people just eating the fish and leaving the batter but in my mind that kind of misses the point of having fish and chips.
Anyway don't let me put you off! there are loads of people who would be fine incorporating F n C into a weight loss plan.0 -
Have something small low cal for breakfast? Like a yoghurt or a fruit.0

I don't think having breakfast AND that would neccessarily be a bad thing, if you watched what you eat during your dinner. -0

When I know I will be indulging in something I focus on having a small yet nutritious breakfast. And then either a healthier dinner or lunch, depending on when the indulgence will occur during the day. It works for me.0

skipping a meal is NEVER Wise. Even a small Yogurt, Protein bar, some eggs and toast. SOMETHING for breakfast is the best. You know you're going to eat them so just adjust the rest of your meals around it. ENJOY them Ahhh to have some descent fish and chips. Relax, enjoy, and then just eat a smaller veggie style dinner.

i heard that it doesn't matter what time you eat. so if you decide to not eat the whole day and eat only at night, you won't gain weight. however, this isn't good for you but its your decision! do what you think you'd like0

I don't see why not but skipping breakfast isn't the best thing to do.. maybe just have a banana or something small for breakfast and then enjoy your chips0

Well I had the Fish & Chips.....................and oh boy were they good, we have new management at our local chippy, and for some reason he seems to have chosen my business partner and i to do his word of mouth marketing. We ask for the special offer "Mini" Fish & Chips...........He's Greek, generous and hospitable, nobody could eat the amount of Chips he gives us, as for the size of the Fish..........Oh dear....................BIG!!!!!!
For two blokes this has become somewhat a competition, you might say our own version of "man V food" For some reason Mr Greek also decided to throw in a couple of free fishcakes also.
Well were did all this lead to, how did I feel? .................Guilty, I felt I had let down myself and all my new found friends on MFP, to the point where I couldn't bring myself to participate in Friend interaction, I must add at this point that it wasn't just the Fish & Chips. Only the Evening before I had put away a Giant portion Donner Kebab and last night indulged in Indian food, beer and Chocolate.
This has all lead me to start thinking seriously about my weight problem and to look a little more deeply at myself and the psychology behind all of this. Why Did I over eat? Why did I feel Guilty? Why do I get cravings? Why do I prefer foods that are bad for me?
So many question and I'm hoping, with your help I can answer them and beat this stinking problem of excess fat in my body that I have carried around with me for so long and I'm so damned fed-up with0 -
All those takeaways sound like a habit you've got into (Friday night is pizza night, etc)
And as we all know, habits are hard to break - but can be done. You don't have to give up that sort of food altogether, but you do need to keep for a once a week treat.
Are you much of a cook yourself? It's not that hard to make healthier versions at home - I baked cod fillets last night in a couscous crumb, served with sweet potato wedges. Indian can be OK if you avoid creamy sauces, go easy on the rice and pass on the naan.
You're spot on in exploring the WHY you eat - is it habit? Can't cook won't cook? A reward cos you deserve it?0 -
Well actually, I'm a pretty good cook, but also I run a business and time does become an issue here, however I suppose its also an issue of tiredness or plain old can't be arsed0

Hmmm...there you go Simon. Most everyone who is overweight goes through this! Guilt is the number one cause of obesity in my book! We all suffer guilt for some reason or other. To ease that guilt, we all do something to sabatoge ourselves. It could be anything, but I, along with others, choose to overeat.
As to the reason why you prefer bad foods...because they taste so darn good! All that oil, sugar, preservatives? It's to make food taste good! Unnaturally good. So we start to crave it. If we could stay away from all that for at least a month, regular natural food would start tasting good again.
Next Friday, plan a walk for lunchtime. If there is some touristy attraction going on, go to that instead. Pack your own lunch with something healthy that you really really like and have a picnic away from the office. That way you won't feel you have missed out on the fish n chips back at the office. Do this every Friday. Once you have lost 20 pounds or so (not sure how you do it in UK) have a SMALL portion of the fish n chips to reward yourself. Just enough to get the flavor. Bring a healthy lunch on that day too so you won't be tempted to eat more of the fish. Good luck! Remember...today's a new day!0 -
Aha, I think you need to do some forward planning (if you run a business, this should be easy )
Do you have a bit of free time at the weekends? Could you do up multiple batches of curry, pasta sauce, etc, and freeze them in single portions?0 -

that is what Mrs Aperture_Science and I do. It works well and is cheaper than cooking two portions because of bulk buying. We make Quorn Chilli, Curry sauce, Beef Stroganoff, and sometimes bolognaise sauce.0
