How much water do I HAVE to drink to lose weight?

I'm not a big drinker of anything, and to be honest I'm not very fond of water. I know this is terrible, but I have to be honest.

I can typically go through the day and literally maybe drink 3 - 8 oz glasses all day.

This is clearly a problem.

Sooo I'm gonna try and FORCE myself to drink nothing but water and MORE of it! But considering that usually makes me feel like I want to puke, I wanna know how much I absolutely HAVE to have in order to lose weight.

I'm assuming the typical 8-8 oz glasses. Anyone lose weight on less?

I don't drink a whole lot of 'clean' water (without anything in it). I found these fiber drink add-ins that I like at kroger- makes the water taste like raspberry lemonade. I also like a lot of coffee and tea, which (and lets be honest) are mostly water (yes i know, caffeine is a diuretic... i've been told ). I probably only get 3-4 actual glasses of 'clean' water without something else in it, (before, during, and after my workout usually). I've been doing fine. Just stay hydrated. When you're thirsty, drink something.

If you're thirsty - drink. If you're not sure if you're hungry - have a small drink see how you feel.
Just listen to your body. Some days I drink only 3 classes, some days I drink 6-8 plus my morning tea. It just depends on the day.

I usually drink maybe 4-5 drinks a day including water. I am not a big drinker either. I like to just sip and go...LOL!

If you can force yourself to up your wter intake for a few days in a row, i think you'll 're-discover' your thirst. This is what happens to me when I "fall off' drinking enough water. I find I feel a lot better when I drink at least 2L of wter per day. Look slimmer and less bloated too. Good luck!
  • Hi,
Here's what worked for me: Try the app "Drinking Water" - free android app, don't know if it's available on iphones too. I'm sure there are quite a few similar ones out there, but this is the only one I have tried.
I don't mind the taste of water, I just always forgot to drink it!! This app is sooooo simple - it just reminds you to drink throughout the day, and you fill a "glass" on the app when you drink. It's default is 8 glasses, but you can set it to more if you want to aim higher.

I've been using this for 2 weeks now, and have stuck to it every day (the app's reminders are quite insistant, which I find useful!) - I feel really good, losing weight, skin looks clearer, feel alert and instantly awake in the mornings. And my natural thirst has returned - apparently you don't feel thirsty when your body is dehydrated.

    Hope it works for you!

Less bloated definitly - plus, if you're exercising and having some really good burns, water is SO important to flush away that lactic acid so you dont seize up (before AND after exercise). But, like many posters here, I sometimes just CAN'T get my 8 glasses a day.

I try to substitute water for herbal (non caffiene) tea, and that's been working well so far.

Drinking water doesn't make you lose weight, but it is beneficial to your body. I have trouble with plain water, too, though. I use a lot of decaf teas; in fact, there's a water bottle full of peppermint tea on my desk as we speak, and two more bottles of peach tea. I use a little Splenda in mine for sweetness. I have 3 Lifefactory glass water bottles, each 22 oz, so if I finish all 3, I've had my 8 glasses (I prefer glass to plastic or metal water bottles...the taste is not affected as much). The key is to get fluids into your body. According to the Mayo Clinic's website, ANY liquid counts, including coffee, tea, fruit juice, etc. I avoid fruit juice because it's high calorie and I'd rather eat my fruit, but fruit juice counts as liquid.

I would say as long as your urine is pale yellow or clear, you're good. I know that's gross, but urine color tells you alot about whether you are dehydrated. Some days I need more fluids than others. I can usually tell because my skin gets dry when I've not had enough to drink.

Like others have said, I'm not a big water drinker. When I drink water, it usually has some kind of cordial to make it taste better, but I drink lots of teas (mostly black, with small bit of milk, but also green tea, flavored teas) all day long and I'm losing. Just drink whatever you can. Best of luck with your weight loss <3:flowerforyou:

I keep a big water bottle on my desk all day and that inclines me to drink more ....I find if I make a few guidelines for myself, its easier to stick to drinking more water ..... For instance, I try to drink 1/2 to 1 glass of water in the morning .... then at work, I fill up my water bottle right away .... if I'm feeling hungry during the day, I take a few big gulps and see if that will suppress the hunger .

For a week, try to drink one glass of water before each meal ..... any other beverages are a bonus =)

Also, the crystal light mix-ins are delish .... there are TONS of powered packets you can use to add flavor to your water ... or cut up some oranges, lemons or limes and add them to water -- Good luck!

This thread is helpful. I do not drink enough either..sometimes nothing all day. The other inconvenience is having to go to the bathroom every 20 minutes and that is a pain.I have to make it one of my goals. I like the app suggestion. I also try to make the water interesting for instance, I like seltzer. Also when I'm in my drinking mode, I try to get it all in at the beginning of the day, so I'm not getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes! :grumble:
