It entirely depends on your weight, age, gender and intensity of exercise. www.zumbacalories.com is quite a good measure.

I was told that 30 min was approx. 450-500 calories if you were doing full intensity. It would be 350-400 if not. for 30 minutes.

Depending on your weight, I would guess around 450+.... You can really work up a sweat in that class. I love it!

I find that zumbacalories.com is pretty accurate, maybe a smidge too high. I burn about 550-600 for a 55 minute class. Not the Zumba Wii or Kinect game.

Oh, I edited this post to say I do have a Polar FT4 HRM that I use every time.

You can either estimate it here http://www.zumbacalories.com/ or invest in a HRM :)
  • thanks gals :) i do it at home :) i do the Cardio party and the 20 minutes Abs work out! have to say i sweat quite a lot!! :)
  • I just click on "aerobics general". But thanks to the previous person who posted the zumbacalories website - will check it out!

It really depends on several things. High intensity or low intensity? What is YOUR cardio heart rate zone? The best way to tell specifically for you is to use a heart rate monitor and set the ranges for your body. I usually burn 600-800 calories depending on how hard I do it.
  • oh i dont really know, guess i need to get a HRM...... :) so maybe ill be able to fid out exactly :)

I use zumbacalories - most of the ladies in my zumba class have HRMs - and the calories burned are very close. I'm hoping to invest in a HRM soon!

I want a monitor! But my guess is the way I do Zumba, I burn 500-600 and hour.

    Oh...I usually log 500.
  • I think the best way to figure that out is by a heart rate monitor that you can strap around your arm that will also calculate calories burned. Burning calories is a science that depends on your resting heart rate and your maximum heart rate. Your age is also a factor. Zumba has a lot of cardio so if you push yourself and really get the most out of all of the movements you should have a good calorie burn. All that to say, again, use a monitor while you are working out. Problem with guessing calorie burn is that you have to also calculate calorie intake. If you are burning less than you think and take in more calories, you might get discourage if the scale doesn't change or your inches remain the same. On the flip side, if you burn more than you think and don't take in enough calories your body might go into starvation mode. Good luck and happy health!

i use my hrm, and average about 520-600 in a hr.
  • WEAR A HRM the only way to tell cals burned. I researched calories burned in spin class in 45 minutes and it said 500... yet my HRM when i wear it around my chest says 700! that's a big difference.

I log zumba as aerobics, high impact. Pretty sure it's more than 400 something.
  • Hi,
Depending on how active the class is, how many fast songs, follwed by cool down songs. If your zumba instructor enjoys more fast then slow songs you will burn more calories. If your zumba instructor focuses more on toning than cardio you will burn less calories but be toner. Hope this helps
  • I've just finished 60 minutes of Zumba quite high intensity couldn't do much talking, I usually just choose dancing (modern ballet, or twist) as my workout choice which means I burn around 600+ calories but I've just entered my details on Zumba calories.com and it says I've burned 1008! Wow that's great and I enjoy it so much :)
  • thanks again for all the wonderful feed back :) its actually quite fun to do Zumba at home :) im so addicted now :) i so hope that i will loose a few lb this week :) im totally new to diet and excercise.......and im gonna keep this up.... you all are Amazing :) im so happy i joined MFP :) xx

Hey Guys! I just started Zumba with the Zumba Fitness for the Kinect. I was only able to do 22 minutes without fainting for my first try, but i don't know how many calories i burned.
Can anyone help me with how to calculate that? I don't have enough for a HRM, and my parents would kill me if i bought one with their money.

Try using this calorie counter online - http://caloriesburnedhq.com/zumba-calories-burned/
as it will depend on your weight and workout minutes and intensity,

I just completed 21 minutes on Zumba Fitness Core for xbox and the built in calorie counter said I burned 63 calories, so I'm not sure that's too accurate. They say the average hour class can burn around 600+ calories. It's hard to get into at first but once in a routine you will be doing an hour no problem.
  • Zumba is a great workout, and can be done at so many different levels. When I first started taking the class, and didn't know the routines, and the steps, I wasn't burning as many calories as I do now. Now I burn anywhere from 450 to 550 during a 60 minute class. It just depends on how I feel, and how much impact I want. You can make it as easy or challenging as you want to!
