do you have any good tricks for measuring peanut butter?

I love peanut butter, and eat it in my oatmeal everyday, but I have a really hard time measuring out the 2 tablespoon portion because it sticks to everything. I know I could "just eyeball it", but I feel like it'd be too easy to eat 2.5tablespoons instead, which isn't a big difference lookswise (at least to me), but adds on an extra 100 calories.

    Try dipping your spoon in boiling water, it might make the PB slide off easier (I know this works for honey).
    I just use my finger to scrape the PB off the spoon and then lick my finger!

    We have one of those sliding Pampered Chef measuring spoons that works pretty well.

    This is why I have a digital kitchen scale. For many things going over a bit isn't much but for some things like PB it can make a big caloric difference.

    Yeah I'm all about the finger scrape and lick. Don't wanna waste any of that precious PB!

    I've been told that the tip of your thumb from the knuckle to the end is, well, a good rule of thumb.

    Use a gram scale. Each tablespoon is 16 grams. (But check the label as this may vary by brand).

    Mmmm.. I love peanut butter. I recently saw a thread somewhere on here that mentioned Peanut Butter & Co., which apparently has a few different peanut butters, and I HAD to buy some. I spent $10 for both the dark chocolate dreams and the peanut butter w/ white chocolate, and it's AMAZING. Love it... so much.

    Anyways, boiling water might work... maybe try Pam spray? Or olive oil, which might defeat the purpose of measuring since you'll probably be getting more calories than you wanted anyway lol

  • You can use a scale and just dump it straight in your bowl or whatever you're putting it in.

    I just use a regular measuring tablespoon.. Pack it in there, level it off with a knife, then scoop it out and dump it on whatever. It's quite easy :)

    It has to be metal.

    after scooping in your oatmeal, scoop out your peanut butter with the HOT spoon, stir and waaaaaalah you have all of your well deserved peanut butter.

    I use a butter knife to get it out of the tablespoon measuring....thing. lol

    I place my bread on my food scale then zero it out. I apply my peanut butter till it reads what it is supposed to read. Love my food scale it saves the day all the time. I know they sale a pretty good one at walmart which is where I got mine for like 20 bucks.

    It's worth spending the $20 on a kitchen scale. Set the jar on the scale, hit the tare button, then scoop until the scale reads -16 or -32 grams, depending on the serving you want.

    Get a food scale! Literally changed my life (sad, I know). So easy to just 'tare' and bam, 16 grams of PB, and no need to wash measuring spoons every meal!

    I'm usually lazy and just scrape it out of a tablespoon, but another way you can do it is to fill a measuring cup with 1/8 cup of water and then add peanut butter into the water until it the water level gets up to 1/4 cup. (There are four TBSP in 1/4 cup). Just make sure the peanut butter is completely submerged. Then just pour off the water and add your PB to whatever you're using it in! :)

    Another trick I've heard of is to just spray your tablespoon with some non-stick cooking spray, but obviously that adds calories!

    If theres no 'g per tbsp' info on the label - Do this ^ (you may have to reheat the spoon in between the 1st and 2nd spoon.) Whilst the bowl is on scales then you'll have a g measurement to use for each future time x

    I have a big problem with peanut butter - it's one of my binge foods - and as I work through my recovery, I am trying to reincorporate it into my daily eating. I buy the PB pre-measured - Jif sells single-serve "to go" containers, and brands like Justins and PB&Co. sell individual serving packets. It is, of course, not as cost efficient as a jar. But for now, I don't mind the extra few cents.
  • I'm another digital scale lover. I just pop the jar on, zero it, then spoon it out until it says -10g. Love, love, love my peanut butter snacks.

    I just put the jar on the scale, tare the weight, and then take out the correct amount of PBt. Nice accurate way to know how much PB you're eating.

    I just measure in a measuring spoon and use a butterknife to scoop it out. Then I lick the spoon. Yum

    i have been using MFP for 447 days. What is so difficult about using an individual measuring spoon then taking a straight blade spatula or a knife to level off all excess quantities. You're nit-picking about the quantity. Yes, peanut butter is sticky and so are many other products. You are either totally committed to becoming heart healthy or~~you are not.
  • I was just told about pb2. You can buy it on amazon or at bellplantation.com . It is a low calorie low fat peanut butter. I am ordering mine tomorrow cuz I gave up eating peanut butter as it is high in calories and fat, which I would rather use on other food.

    I have never added PB to oatmeal but after reading all of the posts it seems logical that you could
    * measure the PB with a measuring spoon
    *pour the measured amount of hot water required for the oatmeal into a bowl
    *stir the PB covered spoon into the hot water until it dissolves or softens
    *add oatmeal to the PB infused liquid
  • I have a set of silicone measuring spoons. I can fill it with a knife, level it, and just pop it out by pushing in on the back of the spoon.

  • A 1.5" ice-cream scoop (the kind with a squeeze to release handle) holds exactly 1 tbsp.
  • something my boyfriend does (which i think is gross but it really doesn't do anything to the peanut butter) is to take a measuring cup fill it with water and plop the peanut butter in until it goes to your desired measurement..if that makes sense.

    but a tablespoon is about 1 small spoonful. you can always do the finger swipe with it :)
