Hey, I've recently just joined this site, so i'm sorry if i'm a tad slow.

I'm an over weight teen and i'm looking to drop quite a lot of weight by the end of this year.
Ive just got a gym membership which entitles me to all the equipment plus pool, sauna and steam room.
but the thing is...I don't know what to do with it!
what is the best thing to use at the gym to lose weight? for how long, and how many days a week should i go?
basically, im asking for someone to devise a gym routine for me.
I'm at college 3 days of the week, but the rest of the week im free.

any ideas? thankyou!

Does your membership come with a free session with a personal trainer?
I stick to the cardio gym at my gym because I don't know anything about weights. I also take a Pilates class there.

Starting strength by Mark Rippetoe if you've got cash
5x5 - just google it if you want it for free
Couch to 5k is a great cardio program for starters.

Cardio will burn a lot of calories
But lifting will make you look better.
    Strong is the new skinny.

I recommend Starting Strength.... But New Rules of Lifting for Women is a great book to read first, imo. I'm just starting SS and it's simple and effective. Go with lifting 3 days per week, some cardio on a couple days (but don't overdo it like some do), and give yourself a rest day or two.

Also, if you're going to do cardio AND lift on the same day... Lift first. I think you'll want to use your glycogen stores for the lifting, but others will know more about this than me.
  • I was told by a trainer at my gym that if you want to lose weight you need to do cardio 5 days a week. Not so much fun. But you definitely want to start with some weights to start building muscle. Remember that muscle burns more calories than fat. Keep switching up your routine too. Your body will stop progressing if you do the same weights/cardio all the time. Look into the classes that the gym offers. Sometimes you can get into a class that combines cardio with weights.

Good luck! And remember that it is hard to start anything. But keep at it and you'll feel so much better. If you're coordinated even a little try a step class. I love them.
