Not allowed to exercise ):

This is my problem. I was in a car accident about a month and a half ago which threw out my back. I know carrying my weight around doesn't help the situation either. I started a diet but was told by my doctor and therapists that I should lay off the exercise until I'm done with therapy. That's in about 5 more weeks. My doctor suggested I do pool exercises but I do not own or have access to a pool.

Since my first weigh in on January 21st, I've lost 11lbs on my diet alone. I am now starting to lose 1-2 pounds a week. And I really feel like not exercising is taking a toll on my weight loss. I know my back is shot but I also think not exercising is going to make it worse. It doesn't help that I also moved into a new building that has a pretty decent gym on site and I'm itching to jump on the elliptical!

What kind of exercises or regimes should I follow that are back pain friendly? Yoga? Pilates? Any advice would be appreciated!

Losing 1-2 lbs a week is optimal weight loss. Not too much, not too little. So I'd say stick with watching your diet like you've been doing. There are some yoga exercises that are GREAT for back pain, in fact at the beginning of each class (I take it twice a week) our instructor asks if there are any injuries she needs to be mindful of, and she helps those with certain injuries to do the poses that benefit them the most.

I was in a walking boot for about 2 months last year (severe sprain) so I know how that goes, you just want to do SOMETHING! Good luck :)

As MeredithH6 says, losing 1-2lbs per week is ideal. Up until I started cheating a little, I was sticking to my calories and not doing any additional exercise and I was losing around that as well. I'm cutting out the cheating again starting tomorrow and hopefully I'll get back on track.

Definately watch what you eat carefully and you should still be able to lose.

If you really want to exercise, I'd recommend asking your doc for other non-pool exercises 'cause you don't want to end up leaving yourself with long-term damage to your back.
  • Thank you all for your responses!!

I'm seeing the doctor that is in charge of my therapy today and I'm going to see if maybe yoga would be okay. I looked up some classes near my house that are specifically for back pain! I'm going to sign up and see if I can test run one first. Hopefully it helps and I can strengthen those back muscles and lose weight in the process.

At first I thought my back pain was just soreness from being rear-ended and that it would go away within a few days. But unfortunately, it hasn't. And the other day I was attempting to clean the bath tub and I had to stop mid-scrub! You don't realize things aren't copacetic until they start acting up. Dude hit me hard ):
