Question: Do you all update your calorie intake in goals once you lose weight or do you just wait until you lose a certain amount of weight to adjust? Pros? Cons?

Every time I weigh in and have a loss I go to settings and make sure it adjusts. I don't want to keep eating the additional calories if I am not supposed to have them.

Wait, wait, wait. We're supposed to adjust things if we need to lose weight?

I don't understand the question. MFP takes into account your weight loss as it sets your calories. You only need to change your settings if you want to change the amount of weight you want to lose a week - like from 2 pounds a week to 1.5 pounds a week.

When you lose weight, your body doesn't require as many calories. The website does not automatically adjust your calorie goal. I just go in every time I have lost 10 lbs and calculate again. That way, I am still pumped (woo hoo! I just hit the big 5-0!) and don't mind so much when my calorie total for the day is decreased. Mary

As you lose weight it doesn't adjust though. For example if you start at 200 lbs and want to lose a pound a week, it will tell you how many calories to eat per day. If you lose 10 lbs and now weigh 190, it will still be set at losing a pound a week for a 200 lb person. It doesn't automatically re-calibrate to account for your new weight. You have to go in and tell it to adjust. (Although I think when you lose a certain amount it may suggest you do so.)

I honestly can't believe the first few replies! *shakes head* MFP even reminded me to update my profile after I lost 10 lbs.

I recently hit my first 10 lbs lost and MFP automatically prompted me to reset my goals/caloric intake. I did, however, because I still have so much to lose & it was only the first 10 lbs, my daily caloric intake remained at 1200. I will continue to reset/adjust with each 10 lb milestone, but I'm losing just fine right now so 1200 is suiting me just fine. Besides, I don't know how healthy it would be for me to go below that. I guess if I get to the point that it's trying to tell me to go even lower I may have to adjust the amount I want to lose each week.

OOOOH it's a 10lb interval thing. Okay, I haven't reached 10 lbs lost yet. Phew.

I don't think that it will ever tell you to go below 1200 calories a day, because unless a doctor is telling you to do that, it may not be safe.

Thanks to all for posting and for clearing it up for those who did not understand. I have only lost 6lbs so far. I noticed when I went in and changed my weight for the week, I accidentally changed the goals/calories as well. And when I say change, I meant MFP updates it automatically for you if you put in you update your new weight in the GOALS Section. So I was wondering how everyone did that. Alot of my friends on my page said they change at 10lbs too, but I guess since I accidentally did it the first week, I went on ahead and did it this week too. I am only about two weeks in and new to this, so I am still learning .... thank you all again!!!

I'm still having trouble understanding this. I lost 10lbs and it asked me if I wanted to adjust it? I like the rate I'm going at now so I can just keep it the same right?
