What does this mean for you? Having a particular meal with specific kinds of nutrients? Having a coffee? Taking a pre workout drink? I want to hear about your experiences:)

I read on a book (gasp) that coffee is like the most effective pre-workout supplement. It has research and scientific proof to back it up.
whatever you do, don't take the sugarfree energy drinks, it has caffeine but also phenylanines. (Which honestly i don't know what they are but i've heard they're bad).

I used to compete in Miss America Organization pageants and pretty much starve myself for a few days. Tap dance was my talent so right before the talent competition (but after swimsuit) I would have 2 teaspoons of honey. It metabolizes quickly to give you instant energy.

I don't do that anymore because I've seen the light of healthy eating all the time. Now I have a protein/carb mixed snack like a Cliff bar or whole wheat toast w/ peanut butter or almonds w/ an apple. I dunno why I do that or if it's very smart but to me it makes sense. You need the protein to build muscle fibers after they are torn (and I don't eat post workout) and you need the carbs to give you energy.

Curious to hear other responses too.
  • That is really interesting! I occasionally have a cup and feel super guilty because I felt like it was bad haha

I have a black coffee and a snack before I run.
For a short run it is usually fruit (if anything), for a long run - toast or an English muffic with peanut butter and banana.
  • Oo the honey sounds like a good trick for those super sluggish days haha. I usually work out about an hour after breakfast and usually have some sort of whole grain cereal or whole wheat toast as well. I've recently become interested in the hype with all these pre-workout drinks but they don't sound like they would be that great for you in the long run, not to mention how pricey they are.

anyone have any insight on this?

My personal opinon is that most of the hype is pure marketing drivel and is designed to make money for the manufacturer, not to necessarily improve your health or endurance.

I pop 1 or 2 emergency packets in a shot of water right before, I find that gets me going.

Or I will have one per class as I tend to back to back hour classes 3 X week at gym, but the double punch really does it (love the tangerine the best)

I always eat post workout, even if its brown rice protein powder in a cup of almond milk.
