So i starting wearing a pedometer....and i am hoping for some imput on how to log it... It appears i am lightly active by "standards" not sedetary like i thought...i have walked 5,700 steps yesterday...def not at the recommended 10,000 steps so i will be working on that....but none the less should i change my activity level or add it as exercise (my pedometer does average calories for me)....of course i will be wearing it for a few days before i do anything (to get an average) but i would still like some opinions of how others would adjust things :) thanks so much

I don't know that this is necessarily the 'right' thing to do - but I don't log the steps as activity or anything. I have the FitBit and it is hooked up to my MFP but I try not to eat up to those calories, if that makes sense.

I considered getting a fitbit just because it can be synced with my fitness pal... but those things are crazy expensive...if i stick with using this one for a while i figure then i will reward myself by upgrading....so does the fit bit automatically adjust your calories according to your activity level?

Yes- Fitbit, when synched to MFP- will tell MFP how much excersize you have done and MFP will adjust your calorie goal for the day automatically. I try not to eat back those calories either- I just look at them as a cushion, just in case i go a little over. I have only had my fitbit for 3 days and I love it! It is the only thing that has motivated me to move at all. It becomes like a game, trying to see how may steps you can get in a day. Well worth the $100 bucks in my opinion.

I only log my step count in the notes field.
If I take a 20 minute walk or use the elipitical machine I will log those exercises and eat back those calories, but I don't count my steps separately.

I use a pedometer and have set up a custom exercise for it and put in the calories at the end of the day. At this stage I don't eat those calories back but use this just as a guide for myself.

I note everything in the notes section - steps, aerobic steps, distance walked etc

I personally only use my pedometer for when I'm exercising.
  • I have this free app from itunes. I find it more reliable than fallowing the log
Data in myfitnesspal app. I like it cause it shows me a graph which part of the run i slow down.

    What app is this?

Also does that mean i shouldn't include the calories i burn at work? i burn roughly 90 calories an hour when im at work (standing, walking, lifting etc). Because obviously when i enter my calories ive burned at work my calorie intake goes up.

Personally I would not use the pedometers calories at all... They have no personal stats nor do they know what your heart rate is, so they can't give you an accurate calorie estimation.

If you want to know calories burned all day long, then invest in fitbit or bodymediafit/bodybugg. If you want to know calories burned just for exercise then a Polar HRM will work fine.
