Is anyone following the SMD diet? I followed there plan a few years ago and lost close to 90 pounds. Now, not doing what I needed to do, to stay on track, I have gained 45 pounds back. So, I am back on fitness pal, doing the SMD way. I sure hope it works for me again.

Another fad 700-calorie per day starvation diet - oh joy....

Engage in such tomfoolery at your own risk.

You gained the weight back because you killed your metabolism and probably nixed a good amount of muscle mass along with whatever fat you lost. Losing muscle rather than fat means your ability to burn off the calories you consume is lowered. If you're going to do this right, don't follow any junky fad diet. Consume at least 1,500 calories a day and make sure you have a good regime of cardio and resistance training so you can lose the weight and never see it again.
  • Thanks for your honesty. I assume I might have lost some muscle BUT there is NO amount of MUSCLE that would have burned off, what I was eeating to gain the weight back. I am what you call a "JUNK FOOD JUNKIE", so I'll leave it at that...

I started SMD again too, and I kept the weight off, I was a track thrower so I lifted alot and lost no muscle mass, I only gained a little back over 2 years but I want to actually make it to my goal this time

I agree with "letting people do what they want", but I can't bare to see people destroy their bodies knowing I could have helped prevent it. Just know that diets like this do more harm than good; you may lose weight in the here and now, but it is dangerous and in no way sustainable. Please be safe!

I just googled SMD and WOW that is an insane diet! I could not live like that. 1 slice of bread with nothing, plain coffee for breafast? Nope, uh uh

Its actually not as bad as it sounds. You have to alter and substitute alot, so you dont hurt youself. like save bread slices for a chicken sandwich for dinner. and i use fat free creamer and splenda for my coffee. but eat alot of vegetables fruits and i drink chocolate milk or eat cheese so that i dont crave carbs.

Yes I've been following SMD ever since I bought the book in 1982. I was 95-96 kilos. I'm 5'10. 60 years old. BMI in healthy range of 22-23. I'm back on SMD one more time. This time to lose 4/5 kilos to arrive at BMI closer to 21. I've tried all sort of diets. For some strange-unknown reason, SMD alone works for me. To tell you the fact, I've always gained back part of the losses. It never bothered me much. Knowing SMD works (for me) has been a comforting thought. Specially at the times when taste buds and love of food gets the best of me. I write strictly for myself.

I think you should eliminate the idea of DIETING altogether. A DIET in the true sense of the word is a way of life. In fact, when you trace the etymology of the word "diet," you will find that it comes from the Greek "diata," meaning "way of living." Our society now considers a diet as a short term solution to losing weight. I have always considered my diet to be what I plan on doing for the rest of my life....good wholesome foods that benefit my body.

Your health and well-being should not be a short-term goal, but a life-long commitment, which includes conditioning your body along with the proper fuel (i.e. food) for your body. Eliminate one bad eating habit at a time, and you will find it much easier to maintain healthy weight loss and ultimately a healthy lifestyle. :)
