Hey guys,
I joined MFP a little over 1 month ago...Up until last Friday I had lost 22 lbs with eating very healthy and going to the gym 6 days a week. Doing all of that really made me feel great BUT....Last friday I broke my ankle in 2 different places and had 2 surgery since the incident....Now I am not allowed to put ANY pressure on my foot and the Doctor is making me use a wheel Chair for in the house and Crutches for adleast 2 months....I havent filled out my Diary in a few days because I just got out of the hospital again today and I havent been eating alot due to being naseous and I am on medications.....This is very hard for me...and I feel like its a big setback....Will I still be able to lose weight even If I cant do any exercises for the next 2 months? I really need a pep talk because I am not too far from giving up...

MFP builds in the calories you can eat without exercising and still lose weight. You can do strength training with your arms. lift cans while your in your chair if you have to and when you get to physical therapy for your ankle you will lose then too as that will be a workout too. DO NOT GIVE UP. You Will keep losing maybe not as fast, just count it as a small plateau. You don't want to destroy all your hard work by not keeping track and eating healthy. :explode: You are young and will heal quickly and be back at it before you know it. Probably just in time for spring/summer.
You can do it. Hang in there:flowerforyou:

You can do it. You just have to modify your plan for a while. Good luck and stay on track!

wow, that's rough. But keep to your eating goals and you can still lose. Maybe not as fast, but just don't give up. Do whatver exercising you can even if it's just arm movements and leg lifts. But don't cheat and get back on the ankle. I blew my ankle out many years ago and kept trying to get back to normal without letting it heal properly. Not good.
  • Hang in there, girl!!! You have to heal so let your body do what it needs to & heal that ankle properly  However, food does matter. So watch your calories, do what you can, & don't throw in the towel! We are here for you!!!

I know it's hard. I had to have hernia surgery in June & I started the MFP in April, so I felt the same way. I ate healthy & did what I could. Now I am all healed up & at the gym 5 days a week, but it took a few months to get there.

You can do it! We believe in you :flowerforyou:

There are nonweight bearing exercises that you can do. I would work those arms and get on the floor and do leg lifts, sit ups, hop around on the one foot if you can as long as you don't put any pressure on the other one. Loads of chair exercises and videos for people who can't get up... look into those and keep eating healthy. Cut back on the calories as you won't be using them as much.

Tanya, I have lost more than 36 pounds in a litlle more than 3 months, almost no exercise. Simply follow your max calories per day in MFP and you will be fine !
Of course, once you recover, by all means exercise ! I know that I will soon need to do, to gain muscle and be healthier
  • if you give up you will be still healing from a broken bone and dealing with the weight you want to lose. If you give you, you're giving up on yourself.

You started this weight loss journey for a reason. It sucks that you broke your ankle. It really does, but this is just one more obstacle in your way from your goals and your sucess.

The broken bone will heal. It will take time, and your ability to work out will be compromised, but don't give up on yourself. The cost is just too high. Take a break mentally and physically. Once you're a little bit removed from the injury and the upset of your routine being out of wack, you'll hopefully see you're just sad and disappointed right now.

Take care and go easy on yourself!

I started exercising last January (2011) and on the 13th I broke my leg on the treadmill - I chose to do nothing for 3 months til I healed and had totally stalled. Got back on track totally on Nov 1, 2011. Three weeks later I slipped a disk in my back doing Yoga (and they said exercise was good for me?!?) Anyway, I decided I was not going to stall this time. I rode the exercise bike, did water aerobics and did totally back suportive exercises for the next 10 weeks til I felt better. Here is the good news - I did not lose more than 5 pounds, BUT I lost INCHES - LOTS OF THEM. My waist is 3 inches smaller, my chest/back 2 inches, arms, a inch each, etc, so on and so forth. Don't give up. There are multiple non scale victories, losing inches and getting into a smaller plant size makes me go WOOHOO. You can too - don't give up I lost almost a year - you don't have to.

giving up won't make you feel any better. do the best with what you have right now. use your arms, for some exercises. but most of all just be careful with what you eat. your mind will be the happiest and most content when you know your being honest and following through with what you want. you can do this!! :) fightin a good fight. give it your all no matter what the current disability. give it your all mentally, and once you are freed from the wheelchair/crutches...you can return to exercises :) never regret a single thing :) this is a positive journey.

Who says you can't do any exercise? I know you don't feel like it right now since you're on meds, so obviously you'll need to wait until you feel better...but there's nothing that says you can't do pushups on your knees, ab exercises, exercise bands for your upper body, etc. There's PLENTY you can do - you've just got to change your mentality. You can't do what you were used to doing and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. But you CAN promise yourself you will do everything you CAN until you are able to get back to your routine.

Having limitations is no excuse to stop losing weight and exercising. It's going to be harder bc you won't feel like getting up and cooking, but if you really want to lose this weight you will do it.

Not trying to be mean - but you asked for a pep talk :) JUST DO IT - you owe it to yourself to not get off track!!!! Adjust your routine and OWN IT!!!!!!

p.s. hope you feel better soon :)

Congratulations on losing 22lbs!!! I know it is easier said then done but try to keep a positive outlook and make the best of your situation. I once broke my leg and had to get around in a wheelchair for a few weeks. I took it out on a walking path by my house and it was one of the hardest cardio and arm workouts I had done in a very long time.

OMG they same thing happened to me a few years ago. I was on WW, exercising regulary and slipped and fell on the ice breaking my fibia and tibia. I was out for awhile. Physical therapy was a godsend... i talked my trainer into letting me use the bike a little extra every day :)
also, i did a lot arm exercises with free weights and used one of those big balls to do abs. i fought off boredom by playing wii sports sitting down haha.

Yep, I did my first 25lbs without exercise.

You've got to be accurate about tracking everything, try to cut out as much hidden sugars in *real* foods as you can and make sure to get in your nutrition, and before any treats.
It really calms down the cravings for sweets, if that's an issue for you.

I had been very active, but I put on weight after I had an accident which was followed by one health problem on top of another for years. I just gave up trying to get back to my activities because it always seemed to be something wrong. The more that went wrong the more weight I put on, the more weight I gained the more that went wrong.

When I did start doing things again I counted every little tiny thing... My Ex made fun of me because I counted every step in staircases, at work, at the train station, at home. He thought I should jump headlong into hardcore exercises.
But seeing my babysteps add up was encouraging and spurred me on. And I was happy with gradual progress that didn't involve suffering or additional injuries.

Be patient and gentle with yourself let yourself heal and watch how little things can add up.

Just keep trying! I am sure it will be hard, and very uncomfortable, but you can still do it! Your motivations for wanting to lose weight are still there, this is just a setback, a stumbling block that you can overcome. You are a very strong person, who else could have put their mind to work and lose 22lbs in one month? You can still rock it from the chair. I have a MFP friend who is in a chair and he has lost 72 pounds in a year!! Don't give up, girl!!
  • Thank you SO SO SO Much everyone that replied to my post....It is VERY appreciated and you are all telling me EXACTLY what I need to hear right now....You are all right....this is just a Obstacle...I need to find a way around it...I have to control over this injury...and giving up is deffinately NOT going to make me feel better....trust me...I do not need to feel worst than I already do.
