Changed my MFP goals but can this be correct????

I had my goals set to lose 2lbs per week. I have read soooo many threads about eating too little and the inevitable plateau and decided slow and steady is the way to go. Sooooo, I went in and changed my MFP goals! As I said, I had it set to lose 2lb per week which gave me a daily calorie intake of 1200 and when I changed my goals to lose 1.5lbs per week it gave me a new daily calorie allowance of 1720! Surely this cannot be correct? Is it possible that I can eat an extra 500 calories a day (not including my exercise calories which vary from 350-600 per day). I am worried about eating that much and think I will change back....anyone help? Dan, where are you>????
I am 5.5.5 and currently weigh 194lbs and my goal is about 150lbs. Help please.....................

I started off with a goal to lose 1lb a week and my daily calorie goal was set to 1600 not including any gained through excersize. I still managed to lose about 1.5 - 2lb a week this way so I think it might be ok. I'm trying for a bit less now but only because I'm impatient and have a lot to lose.
You probably still wouldn't be eating all your maintainence calories with that amount so you'd probably still lose weight.0 -
Hi
I would recommend you work out you BMR at your current weight, which will then tell you what deficit MFP has given you which should put your mind at rest.

Anyone shed any light on this for me, please?
What is your activity level set to...?0 -
Bump - i wold be interested in the answers to this as i am very similar to you (5'6" tall, 202lb currently would like to get to 150lb)
I am going to change my goal this weekend from 2lb a week to 1lb a week as i have stopped losing weight for the last week or so

That... does not sound right at all. I wish I could shed some light on this for you but... I'm pretty confused by this as well!!! Sorry, hope you find some answers on this!
EDIT: Actually, I was curious so I changed my diet settings from wanting to lose 2 lbs a week to 1.5. My goal before was 1600 and now it's 1860. That's only 260 calories more, I'm not sure why they increased your calories by so much. Did you change any other settings?0 -
i started at 200 and am 5'7....my calorie goal has always been 1200 and i don't eat back my exercise calories. i lose 2 lbs a week. ihave had those weeks where it slowed and so i would eat my calories back for a few days and boom right back to dropping. i would never eat 1780...never!0

I wouldn't put absolute faith in the numbers.
The mfp program is not an exact science. You more or less put in the foods- does anyone measure and weigh everything? Then it tells you approximately what you've burned in exercise. Some figures vary widely to actual HRM totals. So you can't live by these numbers absolutely.
Even the self appointed gurus who think they know it all couldn't possibly know what is best for an individual they've never seen in person. You don't need others opinions.... You will know best.
Try one level for a few weeks and see how you go, change it if it's not working.
Just be patient, it won't happen overnight. Trust your instincts!0 -
yes, it does make sense. mathematically, a pound = 3500 calories. so if you went from losing 2 lbs a week to 1 lb a week, MFP just gave you an extra 500 to eat per day, 500*7 days = 3500 calories.0

The deficit should be 250 cals per half lb loss per week, so if you went from 2lb per week to 1.5lb per week your cals should have increased by 250. So, either you have mistakenly changed it to 1lb per week, giving you the extra 500 cals, or you had previously manually adjusted it to only allow 1200 cals, or you have/had an incorrect weight in there. If you are sure that your current weight is entered correctly, and your goal is set to 1.5lb loss per week, then the calories it is giving you will be correct.0

Actually.... it's 250 cals per day ( x 7 days) for a half pound loss0 -
Thank you for all the replies guys.....I've just had a re-check of the figures and my daily allowance seems to be set at 1370! I changed my goals mid way through my day yesterday and I had 350 exercise calories added and I think that's where the 1720 totals for the day came from. :blushing: This seems to make more sense although if I add my daily exercise calories, which vary between 300-600, I will have a daily allowance of 1670-1970! Seems like a lot still. I really would like to lose 2lbs per week but I am afraid that the 1200 daily allowance will eventually catch up on me and I will plateau at some stage and I am trying to avoid this.
I've just checked by BMR and it seems to be 1620 or so.0 -
I am 5'3 and 122 pounds...trying to lose that last 7 pounds. I had my goal set the same as you did...2 lbs per week and lost nothing. I kept reading, like you, the posts about eating more and losing. I raised my calories to 1400...still nothing. I would put my exercise in, but I always left a deficit....sometimes as much as 500-800 calories, thinking that would work better. So, really, I was having a deficit of more than 1000 calories on most days, which is way too much. My body was just holding on to everything.
I read a post about setting it up differently. It''s really the same thing though. I set mine up for maintenance a91750). Now, I put in my exercise calories and then I eat and leave my net calories in the green by about 300-500 calories. That way I can see my actual deficit, as opposed to just knowing that it's there and that they have done it for me. I know, it's the same thing. It makes a difference though. Because I can actually see the number of calories uneaten (I would probably never leave a 1200 calorie deficit if I can see that it's there), I am eating more. It just changes how I see it. So, now at 5'3 with just 7 pounds to lose...this week I burned between 600-900 calories almost everyday with exercise and at about 200-2300 calories and lost a pound! The scale hasn't moved in weeks until I stopped starving my body.
Some people lose while eating less, but why would you want to? There are some really good tips here...

I think if you really look at the numbers and what your BMR is and how many net calories you are eating after exercise, you'll find a huge deficit...much more than necessary with the way your are eating. I wouldn't do a huge deficit if I were you...well I did that and I hope that I have learned my lesson!0 -

I've just checked by BMR and it seems to be 1620 or so.
The settings below are what most people have set to lose successfully
20 lbs or less to lose - change settings to 0.5 lb loss per week
20 - 50 lbs to lose - change settings to lb loss per week
50 – 75 lbs to lose - change settings to 1.5 lb loss per week
75 lbs or more to lose - change settings to 2 lb loss per week0
